This week I thought I'd do a throwback.  One of the very things I ever cut with my Silhouette was a set of vinyl labels for some vintage glass canisters I found at my local thrift store. I look at them on my counter daily...ah and to think that was the start of something so amazing.  Okay sorry....

Anyway, at the time I used a tag to create the label shape but since I got the tag elsewhere I can't give that one away. So I designed my own similar labels and that's what I'm giving you today. Can you believe these tags are just a rounded rectangle, a two squares and two ovals all welded together and then internal offset?

I added text for what I thought were some of the most common canisters (because I know most people don't keep almond and coconut flour in theirs.)  But these are customizable so you can easily change the text for your needs.

Oh and the best part is - if you carefully weed out the center of the label, you can use it too! It's like a two for one...you can see that's what I did on the back side of my canisters.

Craft Show Series Part 3: Don't Forget the Details

Today's my first craft show (I'll be Instagramming it so follow Silhouette School on IG for behind the scenes updates) so I thought it would be appropriate time to share the third installment of the Craft Show Series.  Let's just make one thing clear: I'm a nervous wreck.  I'm a bundle of nerves even though I've done all the things I've said here to do to NOT be a nervous wreck.  I can't help it - it's my first time selling at a show. I've sold plenty on Etsy and to family and friends and friends of friends...but never to complete strangers in person.

Since I don't usually keep inventory, for months I've been crafting and creating and sewing prepping for my first show.  Pricing, branding and advertising have been in the works for some time, too.  But at some point though I had to stop all that and think about the details...because the details are almost as important as the products and the price.

HTV and Vinyl Storage in an Over the Door Shoe Organizer (Bigger and Better)

A few months ago I shared my vinyl storage solution on the blog. Back then my handy dandy little bucket from the dollar store did the trick. After some custom orders, purchasing the extreme deal of 30 sheets of 24x24" vinyl from Amazon, and few other "I just have to get more vinyl" purchases the bucket just ain't cutting it.

Vinyl was literally spilling onto the floor and all over my desk(s). Scraps were taking over. Rolls were coming undone. I was ordering more vinyl because I didn't realize what I actually had because I couldn't find it or worse it was bent because I hadn't stored it neatly.

Perhaps my husband has a point when he slips into his hazmat suit to enter... (I'm mortified to even share this because my house is honestly very tidy with the exception of this one little space but...for the good of the blog.)

Regardless I'm on a mission to make my craft room neater (at least for the next 8.5 minutes until I get into 12 more projects at the same time) and more organized and that starts with getting my vinyl stash in order.

A few of my fellow vinyl hoarders suggested an over-the-door shoe organizer as the solution to my vinyl woes.  I researched a few different shoe organizers and finally settled on this 30 pair Shoes Away organizer. 

I picked this one for a few different reasons:

• It has a lot of compartments. I have a lot of vinyl. 
• The compartments are horizontal, but angled slightly upwards so the vinyl won't fall out. I just had a feeling the organizers with the vertical slots would cause my vinyl to look messy as it was sticking up on top of each other. 
• The compartments are clear so I can easily see the vinyl without pulling everything out. 
• It was on sale. 

I started by rolling each roll/sheet of vinyl neatly and secured it loosely with a piece of painters tape to keep it rolled.  I know that not everyone agrees with storing vinyl in a roll (some prefer to store vinyl in a long flat container like this) due to the possibility of bubbles, but I have had no problems. 

I put adhesive - glossy and matte - on the left side and all my HTV on the right according to color.

I even slipped my contact paper along the top and put my transfer paper in one of the slots.

And as for my scrap pieces...they're now in my vinyl bucket.  You can check out the tutorial on how I layered the 'Vinyl' label here!

DIY Custom Mailbox Decals (Silhouette Tutorial)

Vinyl makes it super easy to add curb appeal to your home.  I've done many vinyl projects outside - remember my front door welcome wreath and my faux carriage garage doors?  My latest exterior project - making a custom mailbox decal - took me 15 minutes start to finish and that included creating the design from scratch. Today I'm going to share with you some tips so you, too, can make easily design a custom mailbox decal.

DIY Chore Chart Using Chalkboard Vinyl (Free Studio File)

Last week I gave you a sneak peek of this project in the tutorial on applying vinyl straight, but today I'm going to share the full reveal.   My daughter has come up with some pretty creative ways to fill up her piggy bank...like selling water with Craisins in it (when life runs out of lemons..make craisin water, I guess). So my husband and I decided to have pity on the poor neighbors and come up with some chores that our 6 year old could do to earn herself some money to fill out her stuffed animal collection (are you picking up on my sarcasm here?) ;) 

Anyway, we needed a way to keep track, so I thought I'd make a chore chart that she could check off the chores she's done throughout the week allowing us to add up her chores at the end of the week.  The easiest way I thought we could do it is by using something like a chalkboard that could be erased and re-used.  Enter Chalkboard Vinyl and Chalkboard Markers!

This project is actually super simple...and I'm making it even easier for you by proving the free cut file at the end of this post.  I used a label design from my library and made it really big to get the shape of the chart.  I cut out the chalkboard vinyl (you can pick some up at My Vinyl Direct in the specialty vinyl category) out - it's about 8x10.

Dollar Store Silhouette Vinyl Organization

My craft room is pretty much a certified disaster zone.  I won't scar you for life with pictures, but just know my husband has contemplated buying a hazmat suit for when he has to enter.  It's not that I'm a messy or unorganized person, it's just there's always 1405 projects going on at once, stacks of products to test for my favorite 'students', kids waking up from naps at inopportune times...and it all leads to a bit of an unorganized craft room.

There is one thing that put me over the edge though...and that was my growing stash of vinyl.   I spend good money on that stuff and the last thing I wanted was for it to get ripped, crinkled or walked on and just end up as a pile of waste.   So it was time to find a way to organize my vinyl.

Cutting Washi Tape with Silhouette

Have you guys noticed that Pick Your Plum has some really awesome items that can be used with the Silhouette?  I've gotten vinyl there and there are often tumblers and other items that can be accessorized using the Silhouette. A few weeks back I picked up a 9-roll combo pack of Washi Tape from PYP. It's perfect for making cards, decorating, and pretty much um, everything. Did you also know the Silhouette can cut it? I'm not even kidding - it's so awesome!

Since I had 9 new rolls I needed a place to store my stash and a plain old jar would not do. Why would it?  When the Washi and Silhouette gods get together - magic happens. Just you watch.

You can cut your washi tape design one of two ways - you can stick the washi tape directly onto your Silhouette cutting mat and cut that way or you can do what I did and stick it to a piece of paper and the put the paper on the mat to cut.

Editing Silhouette Library Keywords and File Names

The more you work with Silhouette Studio the more files you start collecting.  While it may not seem too important to keep your library hyper-organized at the beginning, as your library grows you want to make it as easy as possible to find designs and files. The easiest way to do that is by using keywords, descriptions, and a good title.  Today we're answering a reader question from Joanne about that very thing.

"When saving a design, I just recently found a reason to use keywords and descriptions. Can those items be edited? Added after the fact?" 

The short answer is: no.  Silhouette does not provide a way to edit or add keywords after the file has been saved to the library. It seems like a logical thing to be able to edit keywords, but as of this posting there is still no way to do this - easily.


That being said, I thought I'd share a work around.  It's a few more steps, but for those files you really want to edit and add more keywords to this will work.
