Silhouette 'Subtract' & 'Subtract All' Tool Tutorial

Let's talk about the Silhouette Subtract Tool today.  I had a reader question about how to use it recently so I thought it was worth a quick lesson.

Subtract, subtract all, Silhouette tutorial, Silhouette Studio, silhouette 101

The subtract tool lets you cut out or subtract sections of designs so they perfectly align with other designs. In this example, a portion of the M and B are subtracted around the ampersand.

The secret to the subtract tool is layers. Depending on which layer of your design is in the foreground and which is in the background will determine what piece is 'subtracted.'

For this example, since I wanted M and B to have subtracted areas, I made sure the '&' was 'in front.'

Okay let's get started.

All Silhouette cutting mats need a good cleaning once in a while.  Dust, fibers and tiny pieces of paper get stuck to the mat's sticking area, which can make the mat lose its stickiness.  As we all know that can result in poor cutting.

How to (Perfectly) Trace a Photo in Silhouette Studio (Updated 2022)

One of the first tutorials I ever shared on Silhouette School was on how to trace a photo to get a silhouette. The point editing method results in a silhouette and it's perfect if that's what you're looking for.  But what if you want more depth and character and really want to keep the essence of the photo?  The trace function is about to become your new BFF.

The first thing you want to do is find a photo.  It's best to pick a photo that doesn't have a ton of background.  I went with this picture of me and my daughter paddle boarding.  It's obviously a color photo and while you can trace a color photo I find it easier to trace a black and white image since the trace feature works on finding contrast.  Never did I think I'd share a picture of me in a bathing suit on this blog....but...

How to Make Silhouette Rhinestone Sprays (Cut on Vinyl, HTV, & Stencils, too!)

Today I'm answering a reader question on the blog.  The reader asked how to create a rhinestone spray design in Silhouette Studio. It's actually something I've contemplated myself, but it wasn't until this reader inquired that I really felt the challenge to sit down and figure it out. OOHHMMMGGGG you guys - this is so stinking easy - and fast. She literally emailed me back, "How did you do that so fast?"

Well, my friends it's far easier than it looks - if you have Designer Edition. As we've discussed here in the past, you need Silhouette Studio Designer Edition to make custom rhinestone templates and that's what is needed for this tutorial.  But the best news is just because you're using the rhinestone tool, doesn't mean you have to use rhinestones when you cut...as you can see, I cut my spray design on HTV!
