How to Use the Knife Tool in Silhouette Studio to Separate a Design

When you've found the perfect SVG design, and want to cut different parts of it into different colors of HTV or vinyl - you may need to separate the design to do so.

If the design is connected, the Silhouette Studio knife tool will help you separate it.

How to Use the Silhouette Studio Knife Tool

Open up the design in Silhouette Studio. I am using this "hey pumpkin" pillow SVG design.

This design is one from the Pillow Quotes and Design Bundle at So Fontsy. It's one of 95 different SVGs in the bundle, all of which are perfect for a pillow. And the bundle is 90% off, but only for a limited time!

Look closely - when the design is filled with color. Because it's connected together as a single path (line) large areas are filled with the same color.

If you want the pumpkin design to be orange, and the words to be black and the stem to be another colors, the knife tool is the answer!

Click the knife tool on the left hand side of the menu, and a top menu will appear with the knife tool customization options.

"Uncheck" the Auto Apply box. This will allow you to draw the cut line where you want to cut, but the knife tool won't cut it automatically giving you a chance to move the slice to exactly where you want it.

With the Advanced knife options you'll also have the ability to pick a different style knife cut - including a curved slice which is helpful for separating "pumpkin" from the rest of the image.

You can use the slider tool to make adjustments to the size of the curve.

The line will then be selected, so click Apply...to make the cut.

Go back to the knife tool and repeat the same process to the end of letter "n." Just rotate the "knife cut line" so that the end of the letter "n" will have a nice smooth outward curve.

Click "Apply" and delete the middle piece.

The same steps with the knife tool were repeated for the stem of this pumpkin as well.

Now, with the different parts of the SVG separated - you can select them separately and give them different fill colors.

And cut them out in different colors of vinyl, HTV, or Cricut Infusible ink which is what we did for this project.
