Silhouette Hack to Save Vinyl When Layering

If you're a fan of the registration mark method of layering vinyl (and I would highly suggest it) you know it can come at the cost of vinyl.

To perfectly layer vinyl, the registration marks need to be in the same position for each piece of the design. However that can lead to a lot of wasted vinyl. Today I'm sharing a Silhouette trick that will help you save vinyl when layering!

Most of us - myself included put the registration marks at the top of the design. It's just a natural place to put them. But the problem is that can create a lot of wasted material on many designs including this pineapple - which is part of the So Fontsy August Bundle.

You can see that if you cut the three-colored pineapple design you'll end up throwing away a large amount of white and coral vinyl just because of where the registration marks are in relation to where the actual design is.  (If you try to eyeball it you may not center the white piece on the coral correctly or the crown may be uneven.)

The boxes show here, around the design, represent the amount of vinyl needed to cut this design with the registration marks at the top

This is one big reason some people just skip registration marks altogether and opt for the eyeball it method.

But...if you move the registration marks to the side of the design (or the bottom based on the layout of the design) - you can significantly reduce the amount of wasted material.

As you can see in this side by side, the savings is significant by simply moving the position of the registration marks.

Doesn't that give even truer meaning to thinking outside the box? ;)
