My secret weapon is clear sticker sheets and sketch fonts!

All you'll need to make your own handwriting tracing worksheets is a pack of printable clear sticker sheets from Online Labels, a printer, and Silhouette Studio (optional if you want to make custom sheets).

It's easy to turn any single line font or design into a traceable font or design in Silhouette Studio using the line style tool.

For pre schoolers and those learning to write using DIY handwriting worksheets, I would suggest you use a single line font - sometimes called a drawing font or sketch font.  Four single line fonts that I found that work well for DIY handwriting worksheets are Skinny Jeans Sketch Font, Bella Font Sketch, Time to Sketch Font and Madilyn Sketch font for cursive handwriting practice.

If you need to install these fonts, do so then restart Silhouette Studio to get them to appear in your Text Style list.

Creating Your Own Handwriting Practice Sheets

Start in Silhouette Studio by opening the Page Setup Panel. Change the Media Size to Printer so you are working in an area that matches your printer.

Open the text tool from the left sidebar and select the font you want to use. Alternatively you can type out your text in the default font style and change the font next.  I am using Bella Sketch Font.

Type out the words or characters you want your child to practice tracing. Maybe this is their name, the alphabet, numbers or sight words.

Size the text depending on their skill level and fine motor skills. I would suggest using the Character Spacing bar on the Text style panel to add space between the characters.

We need to make several adjustments to the text from the Quick Access Tool Bar.

Change the line style to a perforated line. There are several options so you can decide which works best for you and your child.

You'll also want to be sure to give your line a weight. By default, the line weight is 0.0 which will not print. Only lines with a line weight higher than 0 will print. I made my line weight 1.0.

You can also change the color of the line from the Quick Access Tool bar if you'd like.

If you want to add guide lines, use the Draw a Line tool from the left sidebar. Hold down Shift while you draw out a straight line. Position it directly above top of the letters. Duplicate the line two more times and place a copy in the middle of the letters and at the bottom.  Group the lines and make a duplicate of the group to quickly use set of lines on other rows of text.

Here's another option - which will save you some time..grab some ready-to-print handwriting sheets for preschoolers (on up)  - like this number tracing sheet - that you can simply download and print.

Now you're ready to print.

The trick here is to print on clear sticker sheets from Online Labels. There are both laser and inkjet printable clear sheets for whatever type of printer you have.

The reason you want to use clear is because the printer ink will be permanent....

...but you can use dry erase markers on the printable clear sticker sheets making the handwriting worksheet reusable.

  1. I think you could also just print the worksheets and put them inside page protectors.
