A few years ago, I started as a total beginner and I have made every mistake in the book - including spending hours trying to fix a "broken" machine that turned out to just be a screensaver. I'm sharing all of it so you don't have to go through what I went through.
What is a machine embroidery machine?
A machine embroidery machine is a computerized sewing machine that stitches designs automatically from a digital file. You load a design - either from a USB drive, built-in memory, or wirelessly through an app - and the machine does the stitching for you. Like I said, you don't even need to sit and press a pedal. What to look for in a beginner embroidery machine
Not all embroidery machines are created equal. Here's what actually matters when you're just starting out:Embroidery designs you purchase will come in specific sizes to fit in standard hoops. Unlike printing or cutting files, you should not resize your embroidery designs.
An automatic needle threader will save your sanity. Threading the needle by hand every single time you change thread colors gets old fast. The Brother SE2000 has an automatic needle threader built in and it is honestly one of my favorite features on the whole machine.
A large touchscreen makes everything easier. The best beginner machines walk you through every step on screen - what stitch is coming next, when to change colors, when to trim threads. The SE2000 screen is large, clear, and incredibly intuitive.
The best embroidery machine for beginners
My top recommendation is the Brother SE2000. It's easy enough for beginners, but powerful enough for advanced users. The price is under $1500 and you're getting both an embroidery machine and sewing machine in one. I also have a Bai 15 needle embroidery machine and while it's AMAZING, I would not consider it entry level.Step 1 - Set up your machine on wireless network
The first thing you want to do when you get your Brother SE2000 is connect it to your wireless network. This is what unlocks the Artspira app and wireless design transfer. It takes just a few minutes and works on other compatible Brother machines too - including the Brother sublimation printer.Step 2 - Download and connect the Artspira app
Once your machine is on your network, get the Artspira app set up on your phone. There are two parts to this - downloading the app first, then syncing it to your machine. I have separate videos for each step because the connection process has a few more steps than you might expect.Step 3 - Wind the bobbin
Before you can embroider anything you need a wound bobbin loaded in the machine. This trips up a lot of beginners - including me! The key is using the right spool attachment and routing the thread correctly through points 1, 2, and 4 before you start winding.Step 4 - Thread your machine
Threading looks intimidating the first time but it will become second nature. The Brother SE2000 has a numbered threading path (steps 1 through 8) that takes you through exactly where the thread needs to go to correctly thread the machine. The automatic needle threader is a life saver!Common beginner mistakes (and how to avoid them)
The red light panic. If your Brother SE2000 has a red light and nothing you press is working - just touch the touchscreen. It is the screensaver. I spent HOURS trying to fix this before a Brother support rep told me in under a minute. Do not make my mistake! Watch the full video here.Starting too complicated. Use just one or two thread colors on your first project. You can always add complexity once you understand the workflow.
What can you make with a beginner embroidery machine?
So much more than you think! Monogrammed towels and bags. Embroidered shirts, hats, and baby clothes. HTV applique projects that combine your cutting machine and embroidery machine. Custom gifts and personalized items for your home.Shop beginner embroidery machine supplies
