How to Use Magnetic Foil Quill Cutting Mat on Silhouette CAMEO 4

The Silhouette CAMEO 4 has a large metal strip making it a challenge to use the Foil Quill Magnetic Mat.

However, there is a workaround to use the magnetic mat with the Silhouette CAMEO 4 which is a huge time saver when foiling with the Foil Quill.
The Foil Quill Magnetic Mat makes it fast and easy to apply foil to another surface without the need for taping.

To use the Magnetic Mat you place it on a Silhouette cutting mat, then place your surface material (paper or vinyl) then cover with a sheet of foil.  The four magnetic strips keep the foil and paper in place while the foil is applied with the Foil Quill.

However, the large metal strip on the CAMEO 4 attract the magnets which pulls them off the mat and material and can mess up your foiling.  This has made a lot of CAMEO 4 users avoid the Magnetic Mat and go back to the much more time consuming method of taping everything in place on cutting mat.

But there is a trick which allow you to use the Foil Quill Magnetic Mat in the Silhouette CAMEO 4.

Prepare your Magnetic Mat like you normally would by stacking the magnetic mat on a cutting mat, then placing the paper and foil over top.

My suggestion is to work toward the bottom of the mat if possible. This makes it possible to remove the foil after it's done foiling and cut if you need to without unloading the entire mat.

Place the longer magnets vertically along the sides of  the foil. And, if they both fit, place the two shorter magnets both at the bottom of the foil piece instead of one at the top and one at the bottom. This will keep them both away from the metal bar.

Before loading everything into your CAMEO 4 be sure to move both spring rollers all the way to the right. This way they will clear the magnets.

You'll want to use the D Foil Quill adapter (not the regular Silhouette A adapter) in the Silhouette CAMEO 4 due to the larger size of the tool carriage.

The best Silhouette settings for using the Foil Quill can be found here.  Once you have them set, press send and the foiling will begin.

When the foiling is finished, you can remove the magnets...

...and peel back the foil to expose your beautiful foil quill design! So easy using the Foil Quill Magnetic Mat and no tape!!

  1. Can you still cut with the magnetic mat on the cutting mat?

    1. No. Foil Quill advises against it bc the mat and blade will damage each other.
