Silhouette CAMEO Print and Cut DIY Photo Magnets

If you haven't tried cutting printable magnet paper with your Silhouette yet, you're missing out.  This stuff is awesome...and it's my go-to for school pictures. Yes...school pictures.

This a sponsored post, but all opinions are my own.

Not only is printing photos on magnet paper sheets my preferred way to display photos on the fridge - hello, useful magnet and adorable picture - but these also make awesome gifts for the grandparents or aunts and uncles.

All you need for this Silhouette print and cut project is Printable Magnet sheets from Online Labels.com and your favorite photo.  Of course you can do this with any picture you have, but I'm going to use my kiddos' school pictures.

To start you'll want to import the photo into Silhouette Studio. You can do this one of two ways:
  1. If you have Designer Edition it's ideal to import the photo into the My Patterns folder in Silhouette Studio.
  2. If you don't have Designer Edition (get it) but until then, go to File > Open and navigate to the picture file on your computer.
Both of these methods for importing photos into Silhouette Studio are explained in great detail in this Silhouette Studio photo tutorial.

In this example we are going to keep things simple and cut the photo in its original shape - a rectangle. Feel free to scale it down to size using the Scale tool or by dragging one of the corner boxes in or out.

I want to customize these magnet photos slightly by adding the school year and my children's names....but this is where your creative juices can start flowing!

If you just want to add a name or some other text, use the text tool and fill with color so it shows up when it prints.

Because this is going to be a print and cut, be sure to turn off the cut lines on the text by going to the Cut Settings window and clicking "No Cut" while the text is selected.  Then position the text right over the photo where you want it to print. It's a good idea to group the text with the photo by selecting both > right click > group.

For my son's photo magnet, I did a little more design editing to make what looks like a frame...but again - get creative! Again, just make sure ONLY the outer edge is set to cut.

When you're ready, turn on the registration marks to prepare to print and cut.  The keyboard shortcut for print and cut registration marks is "M". If you need to move the marks at all to give yourself more room to cut more than one magnet, go into the Registration Marks tool and pull the bars for all the insets (but the bottom) to the left.

Load the Magnetic White Gloss sheet from Online Labels into your printer so it's oriented so it prints on the white side.

From Silhouette Studio click the Print icon along the top tool bar.

Once your photos print on the magnet paper, let the ink dry for a few minutes to make sure it doesn't smear when you press the sheet onto the Silhouette cutting mat.   Make sure the magnet sheet is stuck down really well to the mat - since it's a heavy material it will move and the cut will be off it doesn't have a solid stick.

In Silhouette Studio, go to the Cut Settings window and click "Printable Magnet Material" from the material list.   I find I get the best cut when I use the Silhouette CAMEO recommended settings from Online Labels for their magnet material which is a Blade of 4, Thickness 33 and speed 1 and double cut.

Do a test cut first to determine if your blade is sharp enough or if you need to make any adjustments.

Send to Cut and then sit back and watch the magic happen.

When the design is finished cutting you should be able to easily remove the excess magnet sheet.

And that's all there is to it - go slap those DIY photo magnets up on the fridge!

What I love about the Online Labels brand printable magnet sheets is they are quality magnet sheets and they leave you with a nice glossy magnet! Not to mention - they have a good stick compared to some of the other printable magnet sheets out there! As you can see even the smallest size magnet firmly holds some art work on the fridge...and there's no curl to the magnet.

Here's another print and cut project I made with the printable magnet sheets from Online Labels....and I have to say the kids loved these DIY magnet dolls.
