Best Vinyl Storage Idea (5 Reasons This $1.99 Solution is the Best)

I've used a lot of different vinyl storage solutions in my days as a vinyl hoarder Silhouette crafter...but nothing has been as space saving and cheap as this!

As my vinyl collection has grown so has my need for better storage for vinyl rolls and sheets. I started off small...

Once I outgrew the bucket....(so embarrassed to post this picture) and my craft room organization was officially in the toilet....

...I moved to an over-the-door shoe holder to store vinyl rolls.  That lasted for more than a year before the pockets got too stretched out from the weight of the vinyl rolls. The rolls started falling every time the door was opened so I needed a better idea to store vinyl.

That's when I ran across this idea of using Ikea bag holder to hold vinyl. I can't take any credit for this idea, but whoever the genius is that came up with this crafting hack - they're my organizing here!

Not only can each of these bag holders easily mount to the wall - they can each hold 14 rolls of vinyl! Did I mention they're $1.99 each?!  I don't have an Ikea store near me so I had to order online. The plastic bag holders ship flat and easily snap together.

You can use the command strips on the back to hang - but I'd recommend you also put a push pin or screw in the little hole on the help support them since the vinyl can get heavy.

I have a lot of vinyl (clearly) so being able to store all that vinyl neatly and on the cheap is a total win!

These plastic bag holders will work to store rolls of vinyl or sheets that you roll up. The holes are 2" in diameter.

Best part about this vinyl storage ideal: it's so pretty!

  3. I'm from The Netherlands, where everyone has an Ikea nearby, and I am in multiple Silhouette groups there. The common opinion about this hack is that it looks pretty but isn't the best for vinyl. Storing the vinyl rolled up this tightly has been linked in those groups to the vinyl stretching, more issues with it separating from the carrier or wrinkling while cutting, more issues with air bubbles gatting caught, or multi color stickers not matching up. There is another ikea hack though, people use the Trofast cabinets with the rolls of vinyl hanging inside on wooden dowels.

    1. I agree! I think it damages the vinyl.

    2. I have been rolling my vinyl, and have received it rolled up for many years. In all honesty ive never had a problem with it, i do however, unroll it and lay i.t flat for a day with some geavy object on the end to allow it to relax before using it. Ive also used it straight from it heing rolled up in a pinch, and no problems. Will check out those cabinets you kentioned but i dont think the bag holders can be beat for 1.99.

  4. I think you should try covering the white curved part with vinyl!

  6. I like this idea, but what do you do with the the smaller pieces that aren't large enough to roll up? I have a large flat box that I toss them into, but then I am forever digging!

    1. I also use the Ikea holders for all of my rolls with no problems, but I use a scrapbook size three-ring binder with 12x12 plastic sleeves to store my 12x12 square vinyl sheets and scraps. I store the vinyl in rainbow color order, back to back, and can slip the scraps down in the the right color sleeve for easy-to-find quick cuts.

  12. I know this will probably come as a shock to some of you, but where I live the nearest IKEA is in another state. I live in upstate NY and have to drive to Massachusetts to go to
    IKEA.

  14. Love this idea but, because I'm just starting on my vinyl collection, I only wanted 2 of them. But, the $10.00 in shipping costs changed my mind very quickly.

  15. This would be great for wrapping paper too. Guess I'll have to hit IKEA in Dallas this weekend.

  16. Where do you order your vinyl from? I'm looking for a cheaper way to order in bulk.

  17. These work wonderfully and at a price you can't beat. The shipping fee is a flat $10, so I just bought as many as possible for that shippingoes price. They ship and store flat units I need them (which didn't take long).
