Amy Chomas Sketch Pen Holder Review & Tutorial

Amy Chomas, sketch pen holder, review, Silhouette tutorial

The Silhouette Sketch Pen feature is one of the coolest...but if you haven't tried a Chomas Creation adjustable sketch pen holder you don't know what you're missing.  The sketch pen holder created by Amy Chomas is not only great quality, but what I love the most - adjustable!  So you can use the same older to sketch with a thin pencil as you can with a Sharpie! I mean how cool is that?
The sketch pen holder fits right into the blade holder on your CAMEO, SD or Portrait and you use the light bulb switch-type screw to tighten and hold in your pen, pencil or marker (you'll need the Chomas marker holder to fit a sharpie, BTW).

To use the Chomas Creations Sketch Pen Holder simply loosen the screw somewhat, remove the blade from the blade holder and replace it with the sketch pen holder on your machine...

....place a popsicle stick (provided) below the sketch pen holder and then put your pen or pencil into the holder with the tip touching the popsicle stick.

Tighten, but don't over-tighten, the screw to secure your pen or pencil.  Lock the blue lock to hold the sketch pen holder tight.

Then slide the popsicle stick out (it's just there so you know how far down to place your writing tool.)

If it's too far down you risk getting drag lines, if it's not far enough down you'll have areas that are not sketched.

The sketch pen holder worked just as it should keeping my pencil still and steady for the entire hour and a half-long sketch (OMG!!! I thought it would NEVER end...but more on that in another post).

If you haven't already, be sure to check out my tutorial on how to use the Amy Chomas engraving tip for Silhouette, too!

  1. So I ordered one of these...I like it, but my Sharpies don't fit, which I kind of assumed they would based on this post.

  2. Bought one and the blade holder won't hold it. As the pencil/pen is writing, the holder moves up and off the paper!@! Not sure what is happening. The blade fits fine and doesn't slip. Any suggestions would be appreciated before I send this back. Very disappointed. And concerned that perhaps the blade holder isn't working properly.

  3. I also ordered the pen holder...my markers don't fit either. Is there a difference between pen and marker holder?

    1. She said in her review that you would have to buy the "marker holder" to use sharpies. (They are different)

  5. wouldn't it stop working as the pencil lead got used up? and the pencil needed sharpening, i have a hard time believing it sketched for more than 2 hours without needing sharpening or repositioning

  8. I see that there are two, a pen holder and a marker holder. Has anyone confirmed that the marker holder can hold a basic Sharpie?

  9. I bought a Chomas Creations adjustable pen holder and I am very disappointed in it. I also have the Silhouette pen holder. So I did a comparison. The Silhouette holders does a much better job and for a lot less money!! I'm sorry I wasted a lot of money on this Chomas Creations adjustable pen holder!
    Here is the reason why:
As you can see in the picture above (the picture with the pencil in the holder) the pencil is leaning against or perhaps toward the holder from the pressure of only one screw. If you don't secure your pen firmly it WILL come loose and ruin your design. Since the pencil is not in the center of the holder your drawing off center. If you are drawing a design and then cutting around the drawing your pencil just made the cut might be through parts of your design because the pencil is leaning and not centered in the pen holder.
Is that clear as mud?? :P
If the Chomas holder had a screw on the opposite side it would be a much better holder.

  10. Thank you for this. I had no idea that my portrait could take a pen holder like this (Which is sad, I've had it far too long to not know this) I'm so excited to get experimenting with this
