SVGs Troubleshooting: SVG Files Won't Cut on Silhouette (And I have Designer Edition)

SVG, troubleshooting, won't cut, Silhouette, Silhouette Studio

So you have Designer Edition, but you still can't get your Silhouette CAMEO or Portrait to cut the files? Fear not!  While it is necessary to have Silhouette Studio Designer Edition to import SVGs there is one more step you have to take to get them actually cut.

To import SVGs into Silhouette Studio go to Open > Navigate to Saved SVGs on computer (If you downloaded a file as part of a zip file, make sure you unzip it).

When you hit 'Okay' the SVG design will open up in your Studio work area.  This olive branch design is from Miss Kate Cuttables...it was one of her recent free daily downloads.

But...there's one major piece missing and it's the reason if I sent this to the Silhouette right now it wouldn't cut. There are NO cut lines around the shapes.

SVG, troubleshooting, won't cut, Silhouette, Silhouette Studio, cut linesTo fix it and add cut lines, highlight the entire design.

Then open up the Cut Settings Window.  (If you're still on V2 it's the scissors with the little red line through it.)

Cut lines are indicated by a red outline.  See  how NOTHING has a cut line around it? That ain't no good!!!

Click 'Cut' and everything will get a cut line around it.

Now you can manipulate (resize, re-color, delete, copy, etc) the design as you would like to before you send it the machine to cut.  And that's all there is to getting your SVGs to cut on your Silhouette.

  1. I have been using the Trace tool on all my SVGS. If I had read this post before I would have saved a ton of time. It's like magic! Thank you!

  2. I have an SVG file that contains some text of instructions along with the image on one page. I am trying to remove the text (about half of the page) with the knife tool so I can use as a print and cut file. I used the knife tool once before (not sure if it was a PNG or SVG file) and succeeded. Any ideas as to why I am unable to do perform this task? I would be eternally grateful for any suggestions you may have. : )

  3. Is there anyway to "update" the library file to keep the cut lines once you have done this? Thank you!

    1. Hi,
Stumbled across your question while looking for something else.
Once you have made your cut lines, right click and go to "make compound path". You can then save it with the cut lines :)
      Hope this is a help.

  6. I am confused by many things that are elementary. I have a Cameo at home. Our school library just bought one for their Technology "Maker Space". We downloaded the software on one of the Desktops in the library. My coworker took the Cameo home to learn to use it. She was logged in under the school's ID and downloaded some files from the schools account. Is there any way to move those files to the school computer for use at school? Same with my home Cameo. When I open my account at school none of my purchased items show up. Also, I bought a 3 month subscription to the store. What happens when that expires? Will I lose any credits I still haven't spent? Will I be able to get on that site without it?

  9. So I just upgraded my software to Designer Edition Plus--however I cant seem to find the function to show cut lines for SVG's...which is part of why I upgraded. My screen doesn't look like the pictures above, I think there has been an upgrade since this was made. Where are they located in the new version??

    1. Apparently they don't reply to comments on this site. I never see any and never have received any. But fortunately we help each other out sometimes! If you go to "send" you will see the cut settings options.

    2. Yup this tutorial was written in a prior version of Silhouette Studio - but it still works the same way. The software just looks a little different
