Silhouette Studio has a feature built right into the top toolbar that lets you select all objects of the same line color — or the same fill color — in one single click. It's called Select by Line Color and Select by Fill Color. This tutorial focuses on Silhouette Studio V5, but the process and the tool is the exact same in Silhouette Studio V4 as well.
Where Is the Select by Color Tool?
The Select By Color tool lives on the top toolbar in Silhouette Studio V5. It looks like a little paint palette icon. There are two versions of the Select by Color Tool:
Select by Line Color — selects all objects that share the same line color.
Select by Fill Color — selects all objects that share the same fill color.
Click the Select by Color tool and choose Select by Line Color.
Select by Fill Color — selects all objects that share the same fill color.
If you were to just use the draw a rectangle tool and draw out a rectangle the options you would have are "Select by Line Color: Red"
and on the "Select by Fill Color" tab you'd have: Transparent.
This is why using line and fill colors are so important - even if you're not printing! All of the line and fill colors will show up here!
How to Use Select by Line Color
Make sure you have objects on your canvas with different line or fill colors. You'll get a small panel with thumbnails of all of the different line colors that are currently in your work area. Use your mouse to click one (or more) of the colors associated with the elements you want to select.

From there, group them, move them, change their cut settings — whatever you need. This is a GAME CHANGER for complex multi-color designs!
How to Use Select by Fill Color in Silhouette Studio
Same idea, just for filled objects instead of outlined ones.Click on the fill colors you want to select and all matching elements get selected.
This is SUPER helpful if you are cutting paper pieces for example that are spread out all over the shape. Now you can select them all and nest them into a smaller area for cutting.
Want to Learn the Rest of the V5 Toolbar?
This is just one of the tools hiding on the Silhouette Studio V5 top toolbar! If you want a complete walkthrough of every tool on the top tool bar and right tool bar — including why options appear and disappear based on what you have selected — I have a full video covering all of it exclusively on Silhouette U.Note: This post may contain affiliate links.
