SVG Vs PNG: Which File Type Should You Use for Cutting?

One question I get on repeat is: "Should I use SVG or PNG files with my Silhouette?"

Honestly, the answer is not completely straightforward. If you have the choice between the two, selecting the ideal file type usually comes down to the technique or process you're going to use.

In this tutorial I'm going to share some really big benefits of SVG files when you're going to be cutting, especially with designs you want to customize.

SVG files are the ideal file type for cutting, but you will need Silhouette Studio Designer Edition or higher. This is a one-time paid upgrade, that's totally worth the $30 or so bucks.

The Big SVG Advantage for Cutting Files

I've got a sports template that I want to customize - it came with both SVG and PNG versions.

Let's say I want to add my school name to this template. If I type out my school name or mascot and it doesn't perfectly fill the space - it's a simple fix with the SVG file.

I can simply scale the text and adjust the other design elements to close up the gap.

With the SVG, I can select individual elements and move them around however I want. It's super easy. To close the gap, I just selected the horizontal line and "basketball" and moved them up.

The design has complete flexibility, and I can manipulate it however I want.

Customizing with PNG Files

If you try the same thing with the PNG file, you have to complete a series of ungrouping and releasing the compound paths, just to move the bottom section up to close the gap.

The struggle here is best shown in video so check this out and you'll see exactly why it's so beneficial to use the SVG file format instead.

When PNG Files are Actually BETTER

There are definitely times when a PNG file is the right choice. They're ideal for printing techniques like sublimation, print and cut stickers, and DTF transfers.

For these uses, PNG works perfectly! You don't need the extra editing capabilities that SVG provides.

My recommendation: Always Choose SVG for Cutting

If you have the option between SVG and PNG, I would always pick the SVG for cutting files - especially if you want to customize them.

With all that said, just because you're going to cut doesn't mean you can't use a PNG file and just because you're going to print doesn't mean you can't use an SVG.
