You can easily make die cut stickers with Roland BN2-20A or BN2-20...and adding the perf cut lines has never been easier with the 20" print and cut machine.
Perf cut lines allows you to cut through both the material and the liner but keep the sticker attached to the raw material roll until you're ready to pop them out. Read on for how to automatically add perf cut lines for Roland!
The new Roland BN2-20/A ecosolvent printers and cutters are great for making vinyl stickers because the ink is waterproof and scratch and fade resistant. Making die cut stickers requires that perf cut lines be added and this can be done automatically in Flexi Designer which is included free with the BN2 machines.
Start by launching DG Connect and click the option to open the Utility.
From the Utility select the type of material you're using or set up a new material. When you get the message that Output is Possible, you can launch Flexi Designer from the DG Connect Hub.
Open your design in Flexi Designer. I'm using this round sticker PNG design that's part of an adorable set of ready to print and cut stickers from So Fontsy which can easily be opened by going to File > Open.
Size the design by selecting it and pulling in one of the corners to scale.
With the design selected, click the Effects Tool menu and click on "Contour Cut."
On the small Design Central panel that pop ups, scroll all the way to the bottom and select the gray "Perf Cut Contour" color. This tells the machine that you want to die cut the stickers.
Check the green checkbox to set the perf cut contour line.
This tells the Roland BN2-20A and BN2-20 to cut through both the vinyl and the backing but leave small areas attached to the main roll so the sticker don't fall out during the cutting process.
If you need to print multiple copies of your design, you can duplicate the design objects before sending them to print and cut. This way, you don't have to add perf cut lines to each one separately.
You can send the stickers to print and cut directly from Flexi. From the top toolbar, click "Send to Device."
Click the "Print Parameters" button at the bottom of the window and confirm the settings in the three tabs. Don't worry that it doesn't explicitly mention "perf cut," you've already set the perf cut in the design.
When you're ready click "Send" and the die cut sticker will start printing and cutting shortly.
One challenge with die cut stickers is removing the backing because it matches the shape of the sticker. To make this easier, you can add both a contour line and a perf contour line in Flexi.
