How to Prevent Sublimation from Bleeding Through Shirts

Don't let sublimation bleed through or unwanted ink transfer ruin your project or your heat press!

In this post, we share a super simple tip for preventing sublimation ink from bleeding through your projects.

The easiest way to protect sublimation ink from bleeding through shirts (and other thin sublimation fabrics) is to always use a piece of parchment paper (or butcher paper) - not wax paper - when pressing sublimation transfers.

Parchment or Butcher Paper

Before pressing, place a piece of parchment paper over the bottom platen of your heat press. This will protect your heat press from getting sublimation ink on it if your sublimation transfer extends beyond the edge of your sublimation blank.

For shirts and sublimation fabrics, also place a piece of parchment paper inside the t shirt (or bag etc.) between the front and the back.

If you use a pressing pillow for sublimation, place the pressing pillow inside the shirt with a piece of parchment paper layered over it (this will also protect your pressing pillow from getting sublimation ink transfer).

The parchment paper can be used multiple times as long as there isn't any ink transfer on it because that ink could then transfer onto your next project.

Designs like this one, from So Fontsy's March SVG and Font Bundle, that have dark or bold colors are most likely to have sublimation ink bleed.

So if the parchment does get ink on it, as you can see it did here, it's best not to re-use it as that ink could transfer to your next project.
