What if you could give up cutting and weeding HTV and vinyl completely and still make full color stickers and shirt designs?
There's a whole category of machine that skips all of that. No cutting, no weeding, no layering. You just print your full color design, and it's ready to go.
That's UV printing. And once you understand what it does, you might never look at weeding the same way again. Let me show you exactly what I mean.
So...what IS a UV printer?
Here's the simplest way I can explain it: your Silhouette CAMEO cuts. A UV printer prints - in full color, directly onto things or onto film - and cures the ink instantly with UV light so it's permanent right away.
So there's no cutting or weeding. There's also no layering multiple colors of vinyl. No layering. When you're UV printing directly onto an item, there's not even any transfer tape.
I'm using my Eufymake E1 to demo, but the process is the same with most desktop flatbed UV printers.
You place the item on the flatbed of the uv printer...
Scan the bed to get a preview in the software.
Size and position the image and then click send.
What you get is a direct print on your item that's highly durable, full color, and completely custom.
I printed this design on a little notebook (in "standard" mode) on my Eufymake E1 and it took about 3.5 minutes. There's no way you could cut all that vinyl and layer it in anywhere close to that amount of time.
Let that sink in for a moment, because if you've spent years weeding intricate designs, it's kind of a game changer.
What a UV printer can do that your Cameo can't
Full color designs with zero weeding. That gorgeous detailed floral design you'd normally have to weed for an hour? You just print it. All the colors, all the detail, at once.
Print directly onto hard objects. Tumblers, wood signs, acrylic (photo below), phone cases, keychains - the design goes right on the item, no vinyl, no transfer.
Make UV DTF stickers without cutting each one. Print a whole sheet of full color stickers and decals, laminate, and apply. No cutting and weeding each design.
Raised, textured prints you can actually feel. Some UV printers build up layers so you get a 3D texture - something your CAMEO simply can't do.
Print white ink. Which means you can print on dark, clear, and colored surfaces and have your design actually show up. (Your regular printer can't print white - UV can!)
Where your Cameo still wins
Now, I'm not saying replace or ditch your Cameo. Your Silhouette is still the best tool for a LOT of things:
It cuts vinyl for walls, cars, and signs. It cuts HTV, paper, cardstock, and sticker sheets. It handles cut files and intricate cutting a UV printer can't touch. And it's a fraction of the cost.
So this isn't CAMEO OR UV printer - for a lot of crafters, it's Cameo and a UV printer - and now that desktop UV printers are coming down in price - it's becoming more attainable. And remember, they do totally different jobs.
Silhouette Cameo vs UV printer: the cost difference
Let's just be honest about the price difference - there's no comparison.
A Silhouette CAMEO 5a runs about $299. An entry level desktop UV printer like the Eufymake E1 or the xTool O1 Omni starts about $2200. So...you're looking at roughly 8-10x the price.
NOTE: Prices change, so check the current number on the eufyMake E1 bundles rather than trusting a number in a blog post.
The ongoing costs are different too. With your Cameo you're buying vinyl, HTV, cutting mats and blades. With a UV printer you're buying ink, and if you're making stickers, UV DTF film and at times replacement print heads. Both have on-going costs.
This is the important part though: a UV printer is not a replacement for your Cameo. It doesn't cut. If you're picturing this as an upgrade where you sell the Cameo and move on, that's not what this is. Paper sticker sheets are a no go. Paper cards and beautiful 3D paper shadow boxes -not happening with a UV printer.
It's a second machine that does things the first one can't, and you'll almost certainly keep using both.
Which means the real question isn't "can I afford to swap." It's "is there enough I want to make that my Cameo can't do" OR that the UV printer would just dramatically speed up the process.
Okay, but do I need one?
I mean did you need a CAMEO? Need is a strong word....so no, like your CAMEO you probably don't NEED a UV printer. It is an investment - we're talking a couple thousand dollars, not a couple hundred. And like any new machine, there's a learning curve. It's not magic; you'll spend some time learning the software and the workflow and the various processes to make different thing like UV DTF stickers or printing directly on tumblers with a rotary.
BUT - if you've ever wished you could just print your design instead of weeding it, if you love making personalized gifts, tumblers, and shirts, and if you're tired of the tedious parts of crafting, this might be the machine that changes everything for you especially now there are desktop UV printers hitting the market at a much more affordable price.
A great place to start: the eufyMake E1 or xTool O1 Omni
If you're curious and want two real options - the xTool O1 Omni and Eufymake E1 are desktop UV printers. Both of them run on MAC or Windows and their software is robust enough without being overwhelming and yet also easy to navigate.

Want to do even MORE - like shirts?
So...here's the thing. The E1 can do a LOT. But if you're sitting there thinking "this is amazing, but I also want to make shirts and apparel for my family," there's a machine worth looking at that goes further.
The xTool O1 Omni UV + DT Fabric model comes in a few different configurations, and one of them adds a second print head for fabric, so it covers hard goods and apparel in one machine.
I do want to set expectations honestly here, because there's a lot of "does it all" marketing floating around: no single configuration literally does everything. The configurations trade off against each other, and which one is right depends entirely on what you're making.
