How to Etch on Slate (Video)

Ever wonder how to etch on slate coasters, a plaque or a cheese or cutting board? It's really actually very easy!

In this tutorial I'll show you how to use Armor Etch to etch on slate in just a few quick steps!

In this beginner etching tutorial we're going to be etching on slate coasters.  I am using a set of 4 x 4" slate coasters I grabbed on Amazon along with some DIY custom stencils that you can make with either Ikonart Stencil Kit  (use SILSCHOOL to get 15% off) or using vinyl.

This set of coffee mug SVG designs from the So Fontsy Bundle of Bundles 5.0 is perfect for coasters. If you're more of a wine girl than coffee, there is also a set of wine sayings that would be perfect too!

In Silhouette Studio draw out a box using the Draw a Rectangle tool that's the same size as the coasters: 4x4.

Then open the designs in the same work area and size each one so they fit into the 4" boxes.

This is literally just to help you with sizing.

How to Make Stencils for Etching with Silhouette

We need to create stencils so you have two options:

Option 1. Cutting Vinyl Stencils for Etching

Cut the designs on stencil material or vinyl to make a vinyl stencil. If you go with this option you will need to create a stencil for each coaster since vinyl stencils are one time use.

If you are cutting vinyl stencils, leave the box around each design. After the designs are cut you will weed OUT the design from the box. But don't weed away the box.

Option 2: Creating Reusable Stencils with Ikonart Stencil Kit

If you have the Ikonart Stencil system you will never cut another vinyl stencil again ;)  So if you're an Ikonart fan like I am, go ahead and print out the stencil designs then follow the emulsion and rinsing process to create your set of reusable silk screen stencils.

How to Etch Slate Coasters

Once your stencils are ready, grab one and place it on top of the slate coaster and press down well especially around the edges.  I used a brayer to ensure the stencil stuck really well.

You want to avoid Armor Etch from bleeding under the stencil.

Use a scraper or paint sponge to blot on a generous layer of Armor Etch

Let the glass etching cream sit on there for about 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing off.

Carefully remove the stencil!

Let the slate coasters dry completely to reveal your beautiful etch!
