How to Perfectly Center HTV on a Pillow (Easy First HTV Project)

If trying to center HTV designs constantly causes you to second guess, I have a few tricks to share today for how to center heat transfer vinyl quickly and easily!

Stop guessing where the center is and instead align your HTV perfectly centered quickly, easily, and without measuring.

For this example, I'm using the Hello Fall SVG from the Whimsical Crafter's SVG Bundle over at So Fontsy. It's part of a bundle of 38 SVGs and it's 87% off for a limited time.

After cutting out the design of your choice into heat transfer vinyl with your Silhouette, take a paper trimmer and trim a rectangle just outside the very edge of the design. Cut as close as you can to edge of the design making sure not to cut through any part of it at all.

Weed out the excess HTV.

Next, you're going to fold the weeded HTV rectangle in half, both horizontally and vertically.

Fold with the sticky side of the HTV carrier sheet facing out. You may want to place it on a piece of parchment paper, so it doesn't stick to your work surface or your fingers.

Your fold lines should be visible across the entire design...

...and intersect in the very middle of the design. Don't worry about folds in the HTV - they will disappear during pressing.

Put the heat transfer vinyl to the side for a few minutes. We need to prep the pillow cover.

Take the pillow cover you're using and, using a heat press, first press it flat for about 3-5 seconds. This helps to remove any wrinkles. If the pillow has a zipper, hang the zipper off the edge of the press before pressing.

Fold the pillow in half horizontally and press it again for about 3-5 seconds. Remember to let the zipper hang off the edge of the press.

Open up the pillow and you'll have a crisp crease the goes along the center of the pillow.

Next, fold the pillow in half the other way so that the fold is perpendicular to the previous fold line you pressed.

Press this fold for 3-5 seconds.

Now, what you have are visible fold lines that run across the center of the pillow and intersect in the middle. These are the same lines you have on the HTV sheet!

You can now align the fold lines of the HTV with the fold lines on the pillow to perfectly center the design in the middle of the pillow.

Press the HTV.

It's as easy at that! No measuring, no guessing, just a quick and simple way to line up your design!
