Trick to Avoiding Wrinkled Transfer Tape on Vinyl: Silhouette Tutorial

Alright so here's the deal, just like I don't want wrinkles, my vinyl doesn't either.  I hate when I get a nice fresh piece of beautiful vinyl from my favorite peeps over at Expressions Vinyl, cut it perfectly and then lay down the transfer tape only to have a wrinkle!!!

This is a sponsored posts, but all opinions are my own.
The struggle is real with wrinkles in transfer tape because they often lead to wrinkled, bubbled or unevenly placed vinyl. The good news is wrinkles can be avoided with one little trick!

First of all I have to say I much prefer the clear transfer tape from Expressions Vinyl over pretty much every other type of transfer material be it tape or transfer paper.  I have the 100 yard roll and as you can imagine, I've been using it for ever.

To avoid wrinkles when applying transfer tape to adhesive vinyl you're actually going to apply the vinyl to the tape rather than the other way around.  So...take your roll of transfer tape and roll it out on a large flat surface, like the floor.  The sticky side of the transfer tape should be facing up.  Do not cut your piece off the roll - leave it attached for now. Keeping the transfer tape on the roll will actually help keep the transfer tape wrinkle-free and in place while you apply the vinyl.

Take your cut and weeded vinyl design and flip it over so the vinyl design is facing down.

Hold each side of vinyl backing with a hand so you have a nice firm grip and to ensure that you place the vinyl down flat. Lay the vinyl down onto the transfer tape and from the back side of the vinyl smooth it out.

Now you can use scissors to cut the transfer tape off the roll. Flip the transfer tape and vinyl over.

Ta da - it's wrinkle free! If only avoiding wrinkles was as easy for me as it is for my vinyl.

At this point you can choose to apply the vinyl to the surface using the hinge method or simply peel the transfer tape away from the backing taking the vinyl design with it.

Big shout out to Expressions Vinyl for supplying the vinyl for this - and so many other Silhouette School tutorials.
