Is Silhouette Studio Business Edition Worth It If You Don't Have a Business?

If you've been using Silhouette Studio for a while, you've probably seen the Business Edition upgrade mentioned and wondered whether it's actually worth the $50 especially if you don't have a business.

The question I get from crafters is often: Do I really need Business Edition if I'm not selling at all?

The honest answer is...I've never heard anyone regret unlocking the full suite of tools and features in Silhouette Studio Business Edition

What is Silhouette Studio Business Edition?

Silhouette Studio is free to download and use. Business Edition is the highest of the one-time paid upgrades. It's currently around $50 and once the license key is applied in the software, it unlocks all of the tools and features instantly.

One thing people often don't realize is Silhouette Studio Business Edition is not a subscription. You pay once, add the license key (on up to three computers) and you're good to go! It also doesn't expire so there's a real long term benefit to the relatively small investment.

What Features Business Edition Unlocks

Business Edition is actually the top tier of three paid upgrades - Designer Edition, Designer Edition Plus, and Business Edition. Each one builds on the last, so Business Edition includes everything in Designer Edition and Designer Edition Plus, plus its own additional features on top.

For hobby crafters the most relevant things Business Edition adds specifically are SVG export, the ability to save as PDF, tiling, advanced nesting, and the ability to open Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw files.

It also includes everything Designer Edition adds including the ability to import custom pattern fills, the advanced knife and rhinestone tools, the nesting feature, shadow tool, and the ability to import SVG, GSD and DXF files.

Just keep in mind: if you want to import SVG files into Silhouette Studio, you need at least Designer Edition. If you want to export as SVG - meaning get your designs out of Studio as an SVG - you need Business Edition

When Business Edition Upgrade is Worth it for Hobbyists

Business Edition is probably worth it for you even without a business if any of these apply to you:
  • You are using Silhouette Studio without a Silhouette cutting machine
  • You've ever wanted to use an SVG or PNG with transparent background in a different program be it Cricut Design Space, Roland Versaworks, Affinity, xTool Creative Space, Illustrator, even Canva...
  • You regularly need to easily trace (vectorize) images to create cut lines
  • You want an easy way to remove backgrounds
  • You regularly fill shapes with digital patterns and want a faster workflow
  • You need the ability to convert JPEG or PNG files into SVGs
  • You've purchased designs from So Fontsy or another shop and need to edit them in a design program
Any one of those justifies the $50 upgrade to Business Edition for crafters.

When you Probably Don't Need It

If you only use Silhouette Studio to design and cut with your Silhouette machine and you never need to export files to use elsewhere, the free version (or Designer Edition) likely does everything you need. The core design tools - basic shapes, text, trace, offset, weld, the Modify panel - are all available without upgrading to Business Edition.

One Thing Worth Knowing

Business Edition is called "Business Edition" but it has nothing to do with selling or commercial licensing. The name is a bit misleading. The upgrade is purely about unlocking additional software features. It doesn't give you any additional rights to use Silhouette's designs commercially, and it doesn't have anything to do with running a business.

If you do decide to upgrade, grab Business Edition at the cheapest price from Swing Design

If you want to see Business Edition's SVG export in action as part of a real workflow, the latest Silhouette U video for Roland members shows exactly how SVG export fits into the white border sticker process - and why it's the step that makes the whole thing work.
