How to Center a Design on a Shirt Without Measuring

Centering a design on a shirt sounds simple until you're standing at your heat press with a transfer in one hand and a tape measure in the other. Trying to figure out where exactly the middle of the shirt is not as easy as it sounds.

Measuring, though, can be time consuming and your HTV or transfer can still end up off center or crooked.

The good news is there's a faster way to find the center of a shirt that doesn't require measuring at all. It's actually the only method I use.

The Fold and Crease Method for Centering

With your heat press warmed up, grab your shirt and fold it shirt in half lengthwise.

You want to line up the two shoulders seams evenly.  Also, make sure the neckline is also aligned.

Now lay the folded shirt flat across the heat and give it a quick press (3-5 seconds is fine).  At this point you just want to lightly crease the shirt so you have a line down the center of the shirt.

Now grab your transfer or HTV and fold it in half as well. You want to fold so any adhesive part is on the outside so it doesn't get stuck to itself.  Gently crease along the center.

At this point both your shirt and your transfer have a straight creased line.  Now you can simply line up the crease on your transfer with the crease on your shirt, position it at the right height, and press.

There's no no ruler needed and no guessing! But you've got a perfectly centered every time.

This works the same way whether you're centering on the front or the back of the shirt, and it works for HTV, DTF, and sublimation transfers.

How Far Down to Place the Transfer?

Centering the transfer on the shirt is the easy part. What most people struggle with is how far down from the neckline the design should be. To be honest, that changes depending on the size of the shirt, whether you're pressing on the front or back, and whether there's a hood involved.

Infant onesies, toddler tees, youth shirts, adult shirts, and hoodies all slightly have different standard placement distances. Pocket designs have their own rules too, including which side they go on (hint: it's the left, and yes it's easy to get this wrong when the shirt is laying flat in front of you).

The full placement guide including exact measurements for every size from infant through adult 4XL, front and back, hoodie back with hood, and pocket placement is all covered in the latest Silhouette U member video.
