Quick Fix When Scaling Patterns in Silhouette Studio Creates White Grid Lines

Have you ever tried to scale a seamless pattern in Silhouette Studio only to get white grid lines?

This is not an uncommon problem especially if you scale to a pretty small size like you might need to if you're creating patterns for printing vinyl, HTV or fabric.  So how do you get rid of those annoying white grid lines?

In this tutorial I'm going to show you a quick and easy hack that I use in Silhouette Studio to hide seamless pattern grid lines!

While they technically shouldn't, the reality is when you scale a seamless pattern fill in Silhouette Studio, sometimes those white grid lines appear between the pattern repeats. If you print like that, no matter what printer you're using, those white lines are going to show up on your final project.

In this example I was creating a pattern for a sublimation mug wrap.  I created a rectangle for the template then filled with a pattern in my Fill Pattern library.

I wanted the pattern pretty small which meant scaling down significantly.  That's when the white lines started to appear.

The fix to hide them is super fast and easy.

Start by making a duplicate (copy/paste) of your image. So in this example I just made a copy of the mug wrap template.

Place them directly on top of each other in Silhouette Studio and select just the top layer.

Use your keyboard arrow keys to shift the top layer just a pixel (single tap) or two up/down/sideways to hide the line.

The pattern on top is hiding the grid lines from the pattern underneath! Since they're almost identical, your eye doesn't notice the slight shift - but those white lines completely disappear.

Printing your seamless pattern

Now you're ready to print! I'm printing this on my Brother SP-1 sublimation printer.

To print to this sublimation printer from Silhouette Studio is as easy as going to File > Print and selecting the printer.

Click Print and watch your seamless pattern come out perfectly - no white grid lines.
