Easiest Way to Move Fonts from an Old PC Computer to a New One

One of the most common questions I get is "how do you move all your fonts from your old PC to your new one without having to reinstall everything?"

It seems like such a time consuming task...but it doesn't have to be.  It's actually much easier than you think! Let me show you exactly how to move fonts from one PC to another without losing a single one.

Before You Start to Transfer Fonts

Before you start the process of transferring your fonts from one computer to a new one, you'll need a few things:
  • Google Drive (Free) (my preference)
    • or USB drive or another type of external drive or cloud storage like Dropbox
  • Old Computer
  • New Computer

Easy Way to Move Fonts from One Computer to Another

As a MAC girl I'm not super proficient with my PC so I like this quick and easy method.

On your PC, hold down the Windows key + R

In the window that pops up type "Fonts" and click Ok.

All your fonts will be in this window. Now you can bulk select them.

Make sure the font window is selected and then hold down Ctrl+A.  This selects all the fonts at the same time.

Copying All Fonts to an External Drive

Now open Google Drive on your original/old computer.

In my case I'm opening Google Drive > +New > Folder.  I have a folder called PC Fonts Migration.

With this new folder open, drag and drop all of the fonts. This will make a duplicate copy on the drive. It should not delete or remove the fonts from your old computer.

Wait while all of your fonts upload to Google Drive. Don't worry the time usually drops far more rapidly than the original estimate.

Accessing and Downloading Your Fonts on Your New Computer

Go to the new computer and open Google Drive and find the Fonts folder you created.  Select the folder (not the fonts themselves). Right click and select Download.

The fonts will download in a zip folder. To access each of the fonts, find the downloaded folder > right click > Extract All.

Now you have access to all of your fonts. Each is downloaded on the new computer, but still needs to be installed.

You can double click the font you want to install and then select "Install". Once this is done the fonts will show up in Silhouette Studio and your other programs when the programs are launched the next time.

I moved almost 200 fonts and I want to install them all.  It is possible to bulk install fonts with Windows 11 - and this tutorial explains it step by step.
