How to Remove a Silhouette Cutting Mat Stuck in the Machine!

Silhouette, cutting mat, stuck, machine
If you haven't experienced the joys of having your Silhouette cutting mat stuck in your machine, count your blessings.  This thing can be a beast to remove with the load and unload buttons doing nothing to budge the mat.  Fortunately, I'm here to share a few tips on getting that stubborn mat back!

The Silhouette cutting mat can get stuck in the machine if a job is paused. Typically, when you re-start the cut job you can get the mat and blade to move, but in those instances when nothing seems to work and you're just pushing buttons in vain...and pulling your hair out at the same time...you need to take things a few steps further to retrieve the mat.   So...

The first thing you need to do is turn off the machine. Then unplug the USB port from the computer. Then unplug the Silhouette's power cord from the outlet.  Take a step back and give yourself a breather.  Let that puppy rest for a minute.  You may even want to close out Silhouette Studio to reset everything (just be sure you save your project, first).

Now work backwards.  Start Silhouette Studio back up. Plug the power cord back into the wall....plug the USB cable back into the computer....and finally turn the machine back on.  Now press the unload button and your mat should start being fed out.  Continue pressing the unload button as many times as you need to to get the mat completely out of the machine.

Breathe a sigh of relief.  All is right with the world again. Whew...

  1. Can you help me? My silhouette is unloading my cutting mat out the back of the machine once its finished cutting! I have to press unload many many times to get it come out the front. I don't know what happened prior to it starting doing this. Any advice you can give me will be much appreciated : )

  3. FYI, this apparently works anytime your machine goes crazy and you turn it off after trying to pause, and it gets stuck in paused status. I was uninstalling the software and drivers, turning stuff off and restarting...but I must have missed the 'unplug' step cause following this EXACTLY worked. Ok, I added in 'put away the laundry' to the 'take a step back' step, but still.

  4. Explain what "Start Silhouette Studio back up." means. What I also need to do is remember to continually make sure that your screen says "unload". If it is really far in and it goes to unload it doesn't come all the way out. So you need to unload a second or third time.
