How To Keep Curved Text from Going Straight in Silhouette Studio (Video)

Converting curved text to path in Silhouette Studio is the one step that keeps your text from snapping back to a straight line.

If you’ve ever curved a team name or year over a shape, deleted the guide line and watched it go flat, this quick video shows exactly what was missing.

Why curved text goes back to straight in Silhouette Studio

When you curve text with the text to path feature, the text stays attached to the line or shape you dragged it onto. Delete that guide line and the text has nothing left to follow, so it drops back to flat.

This trips people up most often with templates. A design file might tell you to curve your text along a line and then delete the line, but that leaves out the step that actually locks the curve in place. In this video I add custom text over a basketball template and show what goes wrong, then how to fix it.

For the full written walkthrough, see The RIGHT Way to Curve Text in Silhouette Studio.

What to adjust before you convert to path

Get the text looking exactly right while it’s still on the curve. You can use the slider to move the text closer to or farther from the line, and open the Text Style panel to change the character spacing if you want the letters tighter or looser.

Once it looks the way you want, right-click the text and choose Convert to Path. Now you can delete the guide line and the curve stays.

What changes after converting text to a path

A path is just a shape, so once text is converted it’s no longer text. You won’t be able to change the font or type in a new font size. You can still resize it with the scaling tools, but make all of your text edits first and convert last.
