One of the most common questions I get about UV DTF is what happens when you mess one up. The purpose of UV DTF is that the adhesion is strong and it's not meant to be taken off.
So can you actually get the sticker off and save the blank? The short answer is yes. But there's a catch, and how well it works depends a lot on what your tumbler is made of.
What is UV DTF (and why is it hard to remove)?
If you're new to UV DTF, it's a sticker-style transfer made on a UV printer like an xTool Omni or Eufymake E1. Layers of white ink, color ink, and gloss are printed in layers and cured with UV light onto a film with adhesive, then you rub the sticker onto hard surfaces like tumblers, glass, and acrylic.
Unlike vinyl, a UV DTF sticker isn't one layer. You're dealing with several layers of ink plus the strong adhesive underneath, and both have to come off.
What you need to remove a UV DTF sticker
You need a few things to successfully remove a UV DTF sticker including GooGone, a utility knife and I recommend a tumbler cradle as well to support the drinkware. I created a quick add Amazon supply list for you here.
You also probably want something to protect the surface because this gets messy. Goo Gone is oily and can be a mess itself.
How it went on three different surfaces
I tested this UV DTF remover method on three blanks from my (many) junk drawers, each with a sticker from a different printer and this method worked on all of them!
Removing UV DTF Stickers from Glass
This one had a full UV DTF wrap that I printed on the Epson V1070 almost a year ago. I had some cracking issues and it never came out right but I didn't want to throw out the glass can.
Give it a minute or so and then use the utility knife to scrape away the ink layers and the adhesive.
It took about 5 minutes of GooGone and scraping to get it completely off.
From across the room it looks great. Up close, you can see a mix of light scratches and leftover adhesive. Totally fine for me to use in tutorials, but I wouldn't sell it.
Coated Stainless Tumbler
This one had a larger stickers and then some smaller stickers - they were all printed as one on the ProColored TX800.
My biggest 'ah ha' moment here is how you hold the blade is really important. You need to keep it almost flat against the tumbler to avoid taking a chunk out of the coating...which I did.
Tumbler with my First Omni UV DTF Sticker
This was the very first UV DTF sticker I made on my xTool O1 Omni. At the time the default ink mode settings put down far too many layers of color and it really darkened the design - so I wanted to remove it.
The tumbler has a rubbery-feeling finish, and the sticker came off the fastest of all three.
Even after it looked clean, there was still something left on the cup that you can't wipe off. I show you exactly what it is and how to get it off in the video.
