Knowing how to price your DTF transfers is the difference between losing money and actually making a profit.
DTF transfer pricing feels like a guessing game wondering how much ink did a specific design actually use? How much film? When you have no real idea you just kind of guess and hope it covers it...because that's what your competitors are charging, anyway.
I'm here to tell you - you do not have to guess and you should KNOW your costs. A lot of DTF rip softwares will even tell you exactly what a single transfer costs in supplies before you even hit print.
Let me show you how to find that number and turn it into a real price.
Guessing at your pricing is costing you money
If you underprice, you are losing money on every single shirt, and you might not notice until you look at your ink bill at the end of the month and wonder where all your profit went.
If you overprice because you padded the number to feel safe, you are losing sales to the seller down the road who actually did the math and figured out where he can comfortably sell DTF transfers for a profile.
Either way, guessing costs you. And you're probably simply overlooking the breakdown in your software.
The estimate hiding in your print dialog
If you are using the
xTool Apparel Printer and xTool Studio, when you go to print a transfer, your software gives you a confirmation screen first. Most of us glance at it, see the file size and the little time estimate, and click straight through.
It is easy to miss, but there is an option on that screen to pull an estimated cost, and this is the part that is genuinely useful. It does not just tell you the ink. It tells you the cost of the ink AND the film together.
In xTool Studio you need to first click Calculate to get the Estimated Cost.
So for one specific design, at your specific settings, it tells you exactly how much it's going to cost in ink and film.
You will also have a little powder cost to add on top of that. It's usually pennies per transfer, so it will not move your number by much. And if you want it counted exactly, my

How to price your DTF transfers, step by step
The supplies cost is your starting point, not your final price. Here is how you build it up into something you can actually charge.
Start with that all-in supplies number. In my example, 33 cents for the ink and film. Another 5 cents for the powder and we'll round that to 40 cents.
Then add what the design file cost you. If you bought the design, that is a real cost. I got mine from So Fontsy, so let's say the file was three dollars. Now I am at $3.40.
Then, and this is the part crafters forget constantly, add your time. Your time is not free. Designing, printing, maintenance, pressing, packing. That number has to reflect the fact that a human made this, not just a machine. Decide what your hourly rate is and then add that.
Finally, if you are selling the finished item rather than just the transfer, you add your cost of the blank on top of all of that.
Combined that is your real cost..but again that is NOT your price. Supplies, plus the file, plus your time, plus the blank.

Here is where it gets good, because you have more control over that supplies number than you think, especially the ink half of it.
If you are printing onto a white or light colored shirt, you do not need a full, heavy white underbase. The shirt is already white so take advantage of that by decreasing your white ink density and by using color knockout methods. All that extra white ink is adding cost, thickness, and print time, and buying you almost nothing in return.
