How to Do Multi Color Embroidery on a Single Needle Machine

If you've already done your first single-color embroidery project and you're ready to add some color - this is your next step.

Multi-color embroidery with a single need machine requires changing the thread mid-project, but once you understand the process it is not difficult - even as a beginner.  (You'll also totally understand the convenience of a multi needle machine by the time you're done)!

In this tutorial we'll go start to finish on how to change thread colors mid-project on your Brother SE2000. We're using a two-color design with five total thread switches.

Before you start

This tutorial assumes you already know the fundamentals including how to thread your Brother SE2000 and wind a bobbin before you try multi-color embroidery.

Pick a beginner-friendly multi-color design

For your first multi-color project, I would suggest using a two-color embroidery design. You can either use a design that's built into the machine or import a design from your computer.  I am using this black and read paper airplane with hearts designs from So Fontsy.

Also keep in mind, just because a design has only two colors doesn't mean you are only going to do one thread swap. This design actually required five.  On the Brother SE2000 touchscreen you can see exactly how many color changes will be required before you start stitching.

Thread your machine with color one and start stitching

Load your design, hoop your fabric with stabilizer on the back, attach the hoop to the machine, and start stitching with your first color. For this design I started with black.

The machine will tell you on the touchscreen how long it will take and how many stitches are in this color section.

When you're ready click the green button to begin stitching.

How to Change Thread for Multi Color Embroidery

When the first color is done, your Brother SE2000 will pause and tell you on the touchscreen that it's time to switch colors.

You'll need to remove the hoop from the the machine, but do not remove the fabric from the hoop. The machine knows exactly where your design is positioned because the fabric is still locked into the hoop. The moment you take the fabric out of the hoop you lose that registration and your colors will not line up correctly.

With the hoop off you'll want to remove the thread spool and bobbin and replace them with the second color thread - for me that was red.

Replace the hoop and continue stitching

Once you're rethreaded, lift the presser foot and slide the hoop back onto the frame. Line up the slots and snap it in. Lower the presser foot.

As soon as the presser foot goes down the green light should come back on. Press the button and the machine picks up exactly where it left off. You can see here it's stitching the red hearts.

Repeat for each color change

Repeat this process for as many times as needed to get through your embroidery design. The machine will pause when it's time to remove the hoop and change thread.

One tip - trim your threads each time you do a color change. It keeps everything tidy and makes the back of your project much cleaner when you're done.

Finishing up a Multi Color Embroidery Design

When all color sections are complete the machine will let you know it's done. Remove the hoop, loosen the screw, and pop your fabric out. Tear away the stabilizer from the back and trim all your loose threads - leave at least a quarter inch when trimming so the stitches don't work loose over time.

A note on multi-needle machines

All of this rethreading is exactly why multi-needle embroidery machines exist. On a multi-needle machine like the Bai Mirror, you thread your machine with up to 16 colors and the machine switches between them automatically. No stopping, no rethreading, no swapping bobbins. It's a completely different experience.

The Brother SE2000 is an incredible beginner machine and the single-needle process is totally manageable. But if you find yourself doing a lot of multi-color work and the rethreading is slowing you down, a multi-needle embroidery machine might be just what you need.
