How to Use the Brother SE2000 - First Embroidery Project Step by Step

Do you have a brand new Brother SE2000 and you're not sure where to begin? You're in the right spot!  This is your complete beginner walkthrough for your very first embroidery project on the SE2000, and I promise it's easier than you think.

Here's my philosophy on pretty much everything at Silhouette School: don't jump straight into the complicated stuff before you master the basics. We'll get to multiple thread colors, applique, and other fancy stuff - but we're not starting there.  We are going to pick a simple one-color design, hoop our fabric correctly, and watch this machine do its thing. Once you've got the fundamentals down, you'll be ready to move on!

Before you start - make sure your machine is set up

Before we get into your first project, make sure you've already completed the basic setup steps.  If you haven't done these yet, start here first:

All set? Let's go!

Step 1 - Pick a beginner design from the built-in library

Your Brother SE2000 embroidery machine comes loaded with built-in designs that are ready to embroider immediately, no downloading or USB drive needed. For your very first project, I would highly suggest you start with one of them.

To access the built in embroidery designs, on the machine's home screen, select the basic shapes category (the button looks like a heart).  These are the simplest (and fastest to embroider) designs on the machine.

Use the arrow buttons below the touch screen to scroll through the options. Look for designs that show as only one color thread. If you see more than one thread color in the preview image, keep advancing through. For your first project, you don't want to deal with thread changes.

I'm using this heart that looks like of like rope.  Once you find the design you want to embroider, select it and then click "Set".

From here you can size and rotate if needed.

One important rule - if you ever plan to pair this design with applique or a cutting machine later, do NOT resize it. Keep it at the pre-set size.

Step 2 - Prep your fabric with stabilizer

For your first project, use a scrap piece of fabric.  I cannot stress this enough - do not embroider on a brand new sweatshirt or anything you actually care about. There is a learning curve and a piece of scrap cotton fabric is your best friend right now.

Iron your fabric flat to remove any wrinkles. Cut a small piece of iron-on tearaway stabilizer. It needs to be large enough to cover the area where you're embroidering. It doesn't need to cover the full piece of fabric or the full hoop.

Iron the stabilizer onto the back of your fabric. This keeps the fabric stable while the machine stitches and tears away cleanly when you're done.

Step 3 - Hoop your fabric

The Brother SE2000 hoop has three parts: the outer frame, the inner frame, and the screw.

Here's how to hoop correctly:

Place the outer frame on a flat surface with the screw facing you and the frame attachment on the left. Lay your fabric over it with the stabilizer facing down.

Place the inner frame on top and press it down firmly until it snaps in.

Then tighten the screw at the bottom so the fabric is held securely with no slack.

You can remove and replace the hoop during a project and it will always return to exactly the same position as long as you don't remove the fabric from the hoop itself.

Step 4 - Attach the hoop and start embroidering

Make sure your presser foot is all the way up. Slide the hoop frame under the presser foot and line up the slots on the hoop with the notches on the frame and it will snap in securely.

Lower the presser foot.

On the touchscreen press Embroidery in the far right corner. The red light should turn green and when it does you're ready to embroider. Press the green light and the stitching will begin.

You don't have to do anything else. I would not recommend walking away at this point - just keep an eye on your machine to make sure the thread doesn't get tangled and you don't get any errors or warnings.

The SE2000 touchscreen will show you exactly how long the design will take and how many stitches it contains. For a simple one-color beginner design you're looking at maybe 2-3 minutes.

Step 5 - Remove the hoop and tear away the stabilizer

When the machine is done it will tell you the stitching is complete on the touch screen. Raise the presser foot and press the tab to release the hoop. Gently lift and slide hoop out from under the presser foot.

You can remove the fabric from the hoop either before or after you tear away the stabilizer from the back of the fabric.  Loosen the screw on the hoop slightly and pop the fabric out.

Trim any loose threads and that's it - you just completed your first embroidery project on the Brother SE2000!
