Using Silhouette Studio for Sublimation? Turn Off the Cut Lines ASAP!

If you are using Silhouette Studio for sublimation printing (great idea by the way) there's one crucial step you should take with every single design you work on.

This ONE simple step can save you SO much frustration and time and make the software perform so much better!
I use Silhouette Studio to print a bunch of different sublimation printers including my 24" Epson F570, Epson 170 and Brother SP-1 sublimation printer. Sawgrass used to allow for a direct print option from Silhouette Studio, but now requires you go through Sawgrass Print Utility.

What are cut lines anyway?

When you import a design or image into Silhouette Studio, the software automatically creates cut lines around every element. That's awesome if you're cutting. The software was created specifically for cutting with a Silhouette machine - so this makes sense.

But you can use Silhouette Studio without a Silhouette cutting machine...and when you do, you SHOULD turn off cut lines.  When you're working with files for sublimation these cut lines are just extra data and slow down the software and processing.

Lagging software can be really bad with files intended for printing because they are often high resolution and include feathering or distressing. Every little distressed area has its own cut line.

If you leave all those cut lines on and then manipulate your design, the software has to process all that cut line data PLUS whatever changes you're making.

This leads to: slow processing times, software freezing, or becoming unresponsive totally. You might even experience the software crashing.

How to turn off cut lines (it's SO easy!)

Soooooo...before you do ANYTHING else to your imported design, go immediately to the Send panel.

In Silhouette Studio V4, you want to change the "Cut" options to "No Cut" to turn off the cut lines.

In Silhouette Studio V5, the cut line controls are under the preview box. You'll want to select "Ignore Selected Lines".

That's it - now you can back to the Design area and continue with your sublimation design.

Wasn't that easy? Just one click and you've eliminated all that extra processing data.

If you need to turn the cut lines back on later for some reason you can simply return to the Send panel and change the settings back to "Cut".
