And if you have a CAMEO 5a that Silhouette Studio is STILL seeing as a CAMEO 5..you also need to listen up to avoid this major bug.
I started getting a few reports from Silhouette CAMEO 5a users who could not print and cut. The software was adding CAMEO 5a registration marks (4 marks)...but in the Send panel the connection was registering as a CAMEO 5 (which uses the three mark registration system). This conflict was preventing printing and cutting.
Looking deeper and talking with a few other "power users" and Silhouette Beta testers we realized CAMEO 5a users experiencing this issue are on firmware 1.05.
When the firmware updates on the CAMEO 5a to 1.05 it seems to change something that then triggers Silhouette Studio to erroneously recognize the machine not as a CAMEO 5a, but as the older model CAMEO 5.
How to Check If Your CAMEO 5a is Effected
CAMEO 5a users should go to the Send panel of Silhouette Studio and look at the top of the panel to see what model machine is recognized when the CAMEO 5a is connected.
If it says CAMEO 5 firmware 1.05... then you're experiencing this issue. The problem isn't your machine, your settings, or your design - it's a software and firmware mismatch that's essentially causing your machine to have an identity crisis.
Super, I know.
So what's the fix? Unfortunately there is not really a fix because you can't roll back firmware...BUT there is a workaround patch which I'll explain below. I would also suggest that if you experience this issue you contact Silhouette Customer support and engage in a warranty claim for a bricked machine.
How to Avoid the Firmware Bricking CAMEO 5a Machines
If you have a CAMEO 5a and you're still with firmware 1.01 - GOOD! Now, you want to avoid firmware 1.05 at all costs. Do that by NOT updating to Silhouette Studio V5.0.402 which includes that firmware update - as confirmed by Silhouette.
Immediately turn off automatic updates in Silhouette Studio and do NOT manually update to this version of Studio from the software options.
I also would not update to any future versions of Studio until Silhouette confirms a fix for this issue.
Compatibility Patch and CAMEO5a Temporary Fix
If you're using V5.0.402 or later, which is what prompted the faulty firmware, the software version has one benefit that allows you work around this compatibility issue.
In the Page Setup panel, the machine list includes ALL model machines..even those you don't own and have never connected.
For example, I do not have a CAMEO Pro MK or a CAMEO 5a but you can see those are listed.
So what you can do if you have a bricked CAMEO 5a is, in the Page Setup panel, select the machine as the CAMEO 5.
Since the Send panel is recognizing the connected machine as a CAMEO 5, you will at least no longer have a mismatch. If you are doing a print and cut, the 3 mark type will be used since you selected a CAMEO 5.
The users who experienced the original issue with their CAMEO5a being recognized as a CAMEO5 confirm this workaround works.
