I was invited to attend, but opted to skip this year's event. The biggest new product drop, the Silhouette CAMEO 5α (Alpha) and 15" CAMEO 5α Plus, are more of what I would consider an overdue update to a commonly faulty part in the original CAMEO 5...with a few new features.
In a press release announcing the new Silhouette products in 2025, Silhouette calls the updates to the new model, that will replace the existing CAMEO 5 and CAMEO 5 Plus, a new era of crafting. "The newly redesigned pinch rollers allow for smoother, easier adjustments, while improved visibility helps users align materials with greater accuracy."
Cracking and broken pinch rollers on the Silhouette CAMEO 5 have been a relatively prevalent issue since the model's release a year or so ago. The new CAMEO 5 Alpha model aims to fix that issue.
The new 12" model will come in white, black, pink and Bianco Carrara.
The 15" Plus model will only be available in matte black.
There are some other updates with the CAMEO 5α like adopting the 4 mark print and cut registration system that the 24" Silhouette CAMEO MKII uses. Silhouette says the 4 mark system makes print and cut more accurate.
Users with older model machines including the CAMEO 5 will not have access to this software feature. If the same model is followed as the MK-II, CAMEO 5α users won't have access to the 3-mark print and cut registration set up.
The new CAMEO 5α also has a new Fast Sketch mode which will speed up drawing if you're using a sketch tool like a pen or a marker.
Silhouette also says the list of CAMEO 5α enhancements offer: improved "precision, expanded material compatibility, and intuitive operation."
In addition to the new CAMEO 5α models, there have been some revisions to the Electrostatic mat. The updates allow it to accept thicker materials. That new version of the static electric mat can now accept materials up to 0.5mm.
It's unclear if the original ES mat is getting replaced with a new model or if the additional clearance is due to the CAMEO 5α itself.
