Love Quote: Free Silhouette Studio Cut File (Freebie Friday)

Earlier this week I shared a rather popular tutorial on how to turn lines of script into the shape of a word or a letter. One of the examples I used to demonstration the technique was this Love/love quote...so ou don't have to re-invent the wheel I thought I'd share it with you as this week's Freebie Friday Silhouette Studio cut file!
Silhouette Studio, free cut file, love quote

I'm sharing the file in two different formats - one for cutting and the other for sketching or printing.   You can simply download the file and it's ready to cut/sketch/print. I would not size it too small or the text becomes hard to read.

Please remember, this file, as are all on Silhouette School are free for personal use only!

If you enjoy this file I encourage you to read over the full lesson so you can create your own design using this same technique.  They make beautiful personalized gifts!

How Much Vinyl/HTV Do I Need?: Estimating Material Amounts in Silhouette Studio

I don't think a week has gone by where I haven't gotten an email from a Silhouette School reader asking how to determine how much vinyl will be needed for a project.  The issue usually arises with large size projects or with a large volume - such as a dozen shirts that need HTV.

Silhouette, Silhouette Cameo, HTV, heat transfer vinyl, vinyl

Today I'm going to show you how to easily figure out how much vinyl or heat transfer vinyl you need for a project.  I'm going to demo this Silhouette tutorial using a large wall calendar that I cut on chalkboard vinyl (I'll be sharing the free cut file for the calendar next week).

Silhouette Hack: Sketch and Nest HTV Designs for Perfect Alignment & Limited Waste

Today is another Silhouette hack that will have you stumped in a "duh" moment.   There's a thin line between wasting HTV and perfect alignment.  When cutting HTV it's almost always an either/or: you either waste a ton of heat transfer vinyl so you can keep your design cut in one large piece or you break up the design and cross your fingers that you can re-align it perfectly when you press it.

Well today, Becky and Glenna from My Paper Craze are here with a clever solution for you so you can both conserve your vinyl and have a perfectly placed design!

Glow in the Dark HTV Review & Tutorial (5 Minute Silhouette Project Idea)

So I might have a new obsession in the way of Glow in the Dark HTV.....there I said it! I'm obsessed and you will be too when you see how easy, awesome and fast this project comes together.  First off you know how I roll...I tell it like it is. So if I'm not a fan of some product or accessory or tool, I still put it on the blog and I tell you 'ehhhh not a fan...save your pennies for something else'.   I think you all would agree honest reviews are the most helpful. So consider this a review, tutorial and project idea all rolled into one.

How to Turn the Shape of a Letter or Word into Script in Silhouette studio

I'm not going to go so far as to say I'm a stalker...but I might be a keen observer and it seems to me that some Silhouette crafters want to know how to turn the shape of a letter or a word into script! I, for example, turned the lyrics of my wedding song into the shape of my monogram. I mean...how cool is that?!
Silhouette tutorial, Silhouette Studio, shape, letter, word, script
I am not even exaggerating when I tell you I've been working on finding an answer to this one for weeks.  This is a fairly complex tutorial and one I would consider advanced so hang on for the ride because I promise, you'll LOVE the end result!

Spray Paint (Adhesive) Vinyl for Custom Colors! (Silhouette Tutorial)

Silhouette, Silhouette tutorial, spray paint vinyl, vinyl, custom colorsA few weeks ago I cut a big old white 'Welcome' vinyl decal for a door only to realize it wasn't going to work because our back door is white. DUH!  Instead of throwing out that much vinyl and instead of painting my door,  I decided to try to salvage the cut with some spray paint. Seriously I owe spray paint a lot of credit for the number of times it's saved me!

This was a whole lot of trial and error and I really wasn't sure if it was going to work...there were several points through the process where I was sure it wasn't going to, actually.   But I can tell you it did and I'm happy to be the guinea pig - so whether you messed up and cut on the wrong color vinyl or you just need a custom color vinyl that you can't find or don't want to buy a sheet of vinyl in a color you'll only use once - spray paint to the rescue.

Silhouette Mobile App: First Impressions - The Good, Bad, and...the Beta

So if you follow me on Instagram you know I had (and still have) quite the frown over the fact that I have still not received a download link for the beta version of the Silhouette Mobile App.  I'm not even bitter.... because lucky for me - and you - I do have some awesome weekly contributors here at Silhouette School in Becky and Glenna, from My Paper Craze, and they did get the link and so these fine ladies are here to give us their first impressions on the Silhouette Studio Mobile App!

Now you guys know how I roll - I shoot it straight, avoid the sugar coat and call it like I see it. That's what I encouraged these ladies to do too because I want you to get an honest first impression!  Let's all keep in mind it's BETA!

How to Fake Vinyl and Wood Signs with Wood Look Tiles (And How to Hang Tiles!)

Anyone else love the look of wood signs, but the time commitment with prepping the wood, creating the stencil, paining, and sanding causes it, all too often, to become a back burner project? If you're one of us, I have the sign hack of all sign hacks for you!  The key is these wood-look tiles and your Silhouette...of course!  Plus I'm going to share the trick to hanging tiles!

How to Open Free Files in Silhouette Studio on MAC and PC (Downloaded from Dropbox, Etc)

We interrupt this week's Freebie Friday post to share with you....how to download and use the Freebie Friday Silhouette Cut files!

Every week here on Silhouette School I offer a free Silhouette Studio cut file.  And every week I get more and more questions about how to download and open the free files in Silhouette Studio. So today I'm going to show you how to open free cut files in Silhouette Studio so you can take full advantage!

New Silhouette School booklet..and More Exciting Stuff is Happening

So from time to time I like to take a pause from the Silhouette tutorials, tips and tricks to get a little more personal here on Silhouette School. Now is one of those times.  I might be a little excited...don't even judge my overly-excited-selfie face and jazz hand! (Look mom no hands and I still took a selfie...tricky, eh!)
Silhouette, Silhouette Cameo, Silhouette beginner, Silhouette projects
As some of you know - I am in the process of closing my Etsy shop. A big reason for that is the direction in which Silhouette School is going.  Have no fear the blog and social media outlets aren't going anywhere - if anything they're only going to grow and be even more awesome!

I keep telling you there's lot of big stuff happening behind the scenes and I'm thrilled to finally be able to share at least one or two of those 'things' with you.

How to Hang a Large Vinyl Wall Decal (Silhouette Tutorial Part 2 of 2)

Earlier this week I shared a tutorial on how to cut a large vinyl wall decal with Silhouette. Today I'm sharing the second half of the tutorial and that is how to hang a large vinyl wall decal.  If you had a third hand it might be a bit easier, but since I'm sure you don't grab your painters tape - you know how I love to use painters tape with my Silhouette projects!

Silhouette, Silhouette tutorial, wall decal, vinyl, vinyl decal, vinyl wall decal, multi piece

After you've cut and weeded your design, which you cut on 631 indoor/removable vinyl, grab your clear transfer tape. I prefer the clear - I got a huge roll (and all the vinyl for this project) from Expressions Vinyl - because you can see through it.   If you read the first part the tutorial you know that I had to cut the circle and monogram in three parts and the name in three parts for a total of six pieces.

8 Beautiful Commercial Craft Fonts with Special Characters (That WILL ALL Open in Silhouette Studio)

Silhouette crafters know it can be frustrating to buy a new commercial font only to realize later all the special characters are not accessible in Silhouette Studio - so today I'm sharing not one or two but EIGHT commercial fonts that you can fully open in Studio!

Silhouette, Silhouette Cameo, Silhouette Studio, fonts

Being able to open the glyphs and characters has to do with how the fonts are coded by the font designer.   Unfortunately, there are only a handful of font designers who are fulling unicoding their OTF fonts which allows them to be opened in Studio without the need for any other type of software.

Are you just hearing a bunch of font speak and designer jargin? Yeah me too...just know this:
The Hungry JPEG worked with one of those designers to put together a beautiful set of 8 commercial use fonts - all of them with special characters and glyphs - and all of them accessible in Silhouette Studio.  The best part is you get all of them in the Crafters Font Bundle with commercial license includes - for just $15!
Here's a look at a few of the fonts, but remember, these are just 6 of the 8 fonts in their basic version.

The extra ornaments, glyphs and swooshes can all be accessed, as well, to make the fonts that much more exciting.  It's a two step process...

1) Download and Install: For both MAC and PC users start by downloading and installing each font on your computer while Silhouette Studio is closed.

2) Opening Extra Fonts Characters:   I have two tutorials on Silhouette School on how to access font glyphs and extras for MAC and PC users so I'm not going to bog down this post by repeating the steps....so refer to these tutorials if you're unsure how to gain access to the characters.   Again, remember this only works with fonts that are specially coded like the 8 in The Hungry JPEG Crafters bundle.

Alright now for a few practical uses...For my first design, I used the Amigirl font.
  • I typed 'happy' and 'fall' in two separate text boxes.
  • All the purple characters are special glyphs I replaced the original font with.
  • After I replaced the characters, I welded to the two lines together.
  • Finally I put my text design in a circle and subtracted all to create my circle design.

I cut this one on etched vinyl and placed the decal on a glass candle jar that I emptied out and re-filled with mini pinecones and a tea light.

The design process was much the same for this pillow cover that I updated by adding the word 'family' using the Monkuta font from the Crafters Bundle. The original f and y were replaced with fancy letters to add some flare.  For this no sew pillow cover project, I actually cut the text design on painters drop cloth to adhere to the pillow!

Burlap pillow, DIY, do it yourself, Silhouette Cameo

Using the beautiful - and perhaps my favorite of the set, Edelwies - I created this 'Stay Strong' design.  You can see the two b's are different, as well as the e's - that's because, along with the v, they are all special characters.

Silhouette Cameo, be brave, sweatshirt, DIY, do it yourself

I used Mastura, from the bundle, for 'Broom' on this Halloween sign I created!

Silhouette Cameo, halloween decoration, DIY, do it yourself

As you can see the possibilities are pretty much endless and now that you are able to - and know how to - easily access the the special font characters designing text designs is a lot more exciting!

Remember though, as with all deals from The Hungry JPEG the Crafters Font Bundle will only be around for a month...the 8 specially coded commercial fonts for $15 will be gone mid November!

Mint Studio Library: How to Upload Your Silhouette Studio Design Library in Mint Studio

A limited number of Silhouette Mint machines are now shipping...and by the end of the month they'll be much more widely available. So I thought it was a good time to share this tutorial on uploading your design library to Mint Studio.

Silhouette Mint, Silhouette Studio, Silhouette Studio library, uploadIf you're a new Silhouette Mint owner you may have noticed that when you downloaded and installed Mint Studio, the required software for the stamping machine, none of your designs from your Silhouette Studio library came over.  (Of course if you don't have a Silhouette CAMEO, Portrait, SD or Curio, and only own the Mint you probably have no idea what I'm talking about and in that case - carry on. You'll build your library of designs as you go.)

But for those who have a Silhouette Studio library in the original software, you can access all of your designs and files in Mint Studio, as well.

Cutting Large Vinyl Decals with Silhouette (Part 1 of 2)

Silhouette tutorial, Silhouette Cameo, Silhouette Studio, cut, design, vinyl wall decal
I've been asked time and time again how to cut and apply large vinyl decals created in Silhouette Studio.  I've discussed how to create oversized stencils and shared how to apply wall decals, but today I'm going to combine the two to hopefully make this as easy a process as possible for you.

Awhile back I asked you all what type of large vinyl decal I should put up to demo this tutorial and it was a pretty evenly split between a tree and a monogram.  I'm gonna be honest here - I am not a huge fan of wall decals. BUT for the good of the blog and all you fine, people I decided I'd go with the monogram in my daughter's room.

To start open up Silhouette Studio. At this point just work on the 12x12 virtual mat, don't worry about making this thing ginormous - yet. If you don't already have a design for your wall decal, create it or open it from the library or purchase from the Silhouette Design Store.

'Don't Make Me Get On My Broom' Witch Design: Free Silhouette Studio Cut File

It's Freebie Friday and that means it's time for another free Silhouette Studio cut file. This week I'm sharing this tongue in cheek Don't Make Me Get on My Broom design.

I created the design with a printable in mind, but you can use it so many different ways by separating and rearranging the elements...

The Day Has Come...I'm Closing (Etsy) Shop...and You Can Benefit!

The day has come...

As many of you know in addition to Silhouette School blog, I also have an Etsy shop. I have tried extremely hard to keep the two separate. There are some obvious reasons and there are some not so obvious reasons for that, but it's a decision I made at the beginning. At this time though the reasons don't really matter...just know the time has come that I can't handle both.

Custom DIY-ish Princess Halloween Costume with HTV (Free Sihouette Studio Cut File)

Before I share today's Silhouette tutorial on an adorable Just Add HTV princess costume...you need some background!
Silhouette Studio, HTV, heat transfer vinyl, princess costume, halloween costume, DIY, do it yourself, free cut file
So last year on Halloween my husband, bless his heart, said he was going to the costume store and to get each of us a Halloween costume. A few hours and more than $100 later...this happened.

Use Silhouette to Make Perfect Die Cuts for Acrylic Blanks

Acrylic blanks are hugely popular to personalize with vinyl...but if you want to make a perfect template to fit the blank it's not always an easy task.  Today I'm going to share the easiest way to do this using one of my favorite Silhouette accessories - PixScan.

Silhouette, Silhouette Cameo, die cuts, die cuts for acrylic blanksIf you don't have Pixscan, I would highly recommend it - but in the meantime, I shared another way to make shape templates a few weeks ago, which works great if you don't have Pixscan or if you have a white or clear blank that doesn't pick up well on Pixscan.

Heat Press Teflon Sheet Hack: It's All About the Magnets!

I'm so excited for today's tutorial - it's one of those ones that will have you saying "Why didn't I think of that?" At least that's what I said when I saw this genius heat press hack in the background of a photo Silhouette School contributors Becky and Glenna of My Paper Craze sent me awhile back.

Silhouette, Silhouette Cameo, Cricut, heat press

This little Heat Press Teflon trick is so good I asked the lovely ladies to do a whole blog post on it to share with all of you!  Plus I know how you all feel about heat presses...you have burning questions (all answers on which one I have, where to get it and how to use it can be found here). So here's a quick answer to one more...from Becky and Glenna.

Fight Like a Girl (Breast Cancer Decal): Free Silhouette Studio Cut File

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month so I thought it fitting to share this Fight Like a Girl design that I created for this week's Freebie Friday.

Fight like a girl, breast cancer awareness, decal, Silhouette Studio, free cut file

I previously shared a tutorial on how to cut and layer this exact three color decal on vinyl - you can read the full Silhouette tutorial here.

If you're doing a print and cut, you can change the ribbon color using the fill color tool in Silhouette Studio to show awareness for other types of cancer.

Please remember, this design, like all on Silhouette School unless specifically noted, is for personal use only.
