Silhouette Curio vs CAMEO (or Portrait)

I've had my Silhouette Curio now for several weeks so I'm slowly beginning to see more and more major (and minor) differences between it and the CAMEO and Portrait.  If you read my first impressions of the Curio (not quite a review) you know we got off to quite a rough start.

Silhouette Cameo, Silhouette Curio, comparison
This post, however, isn't about what I like and don't like about the Curio, it's just about straight up facts so you can decide if you need to add a Silhouette Curio to your crafting tool belt.

Silhouette Mint Studio Software Released Ahead of Stamping Machine: First Look and Free Download!

Silhouette Mint Studio, Silhouette Mint
Silhouette America released the new software required for the soon-to-be released Silhouette Mint late Monday. Unlike the Silhouette Curio, which uses the existing Silhouette Studio software with a few new functions, the Mint stamping machine, requires an entirely new software program known as Mint Studio.

Mint Studio is available for download now even though the Mint won't be available for purchase for several more weeks.

A few things I noticed right off the bat - and please keep in mind I haven't had ANY time to play with the software yet.

The Best Heat Transfer Vinyl on Dri Fit and Other Athletic Gear is....

HTV, heat transfer vinyl, dri fit, athletic gear, workout clothes
I'm pretty sure you guys are all talking behind my back telling each other to email me and ask what kind of heat transfer to put on Dri Fit.  No? Well it feels like I've been getting a ton of questions about the best type of HTV for athletic apparel so I figured I'd just do a tutorial on it.

You can certainly try the less expensive Siser Easyweed HTV, but I would really recommend you instead go for the Premium Heat Transfer vinyl from Expressions Vinyl.  It has super stretchability, an ultra-matte finish and a soft, thin texture that almost melts into the fabric. There's no stiffness or bulk at all.

I sacrificed one of my favorite (perfectly good) black workout tanks for this project. I even asked my 4 year old what design I should put on it and he said a skull.  And so...you're welcome!

Set of Pumpkins Free Silhouette Studio Cut File

It's pumpkin-everything season...and it's also Freebie Friday!!! So this week Silhouette School is combining the two and sharing a set of 9 pumpkin cut files that you can use in your fall and halloween crafting!

How to Gradient Fill a Multi Piece Design in Silhouette Studio

Silhouette Studio, Silhouette Cameo, gradient fill, multi piece design
If you've ever used the Silhouette Studio gradient fill tool you may have noticed it has one big draw back: when you add a gradient to a multi-piece design or text it puts the gradient on each individual piece or letter instead of across the entire design.   The good news is there is a work around for this.

Welding Text and Shape Outlines in Silhouette Studio (Home State Decal Tutorial)

Way back in April I made some coasters with a vinyl design on them, as a gift, that you all went wild about on Instagram...I got tons of questions about how I designed the home 'state' design.  The Silhouette tutorial has been on my to do list for months now...but fortunately for you Silhouette School contributors Becky and Glenna from My Paper Craze had the same idea and are here today to explain exactly how to design your own home state design in Silhouette Studio!

How to Make a Rhinestone Decal with Silhouette

So you're not a Rhinestone wearing-kinda girl (or guy)? Rhinestone decals, though, that's something you can get behind? I'm right there with you.  Now that me and rhinestones are back on good terms, I'm going to show you how to make a rhinestone decal that you can put on your car, laptop case, wall, windows, mirrors....or Silhouette. So fun!

Turn Anything into a Silhouette Studio Pattern (for Print and Cut, Custom Paper, & Mockups)

I know I can't be the only one who has stacks and stacks and stacks of scrapbook paper, but never the design I need at the right time.  Happens every.single.time. Well, guess what - you can make your own patterned paper using Silhouette Studio.

Silhouette Studio, pattern, print and cut, custom paper, mock-ups

You will need Silhouette Studio Designer Edition for this - but believe me if you don't have it already - you'll want to get it after you see this. This is so cool...okay so I was in need of some cupcake paper because I was working on a cupcake inspired pocket letter (more on that in another tutorial). Anyway, of course I had no cupcake paper on hand...but (light bulb moment here) my daughter has a cupcake pillow case.

Chevron Circle (Free Silhouette Studio Cut File)

Silhouette Studio, free cut file, chevron circle, Silhouette Cameo
It's time for another Freebie Friday! Today I'm sharing a Chevron Circle design that I created.

All you have to do is add a design to the middle and cut! Think a single letter monogram or maybe a three letter monogram. Or maybe you want to cut it just like it is.

However you decide to use it, just remember it's free for personal use only. That means the design can't be sold and it can't be used on items that are sold. Thanks for understanding!!

How to Add HTV on Towels

I'm answering a reader question today - one I've been asked many times - about how to add heat transfer vinyl to towels.   I sacrificed a small hand towel for this little experiment in case things went sour. But they didn't! It actually worked nicely.

How to Make String Art Patterns with Silhouette

I've been wanting to make string art for some time and I knew that my Silhouette would make it so easy.  Using the rhinestone feature you can make DIY String Art Patterns with just the click of a button in Silhouette Studio.

To use the rhinestone feature you will, of course, need Silhouette Studio Designer Edition. However, you can follow this tutorial on making polka dot shapes and get the same end result if you don't have DE.

Along with the Facebook page's popularity, Silhouette School recently hit some other major milestones: the blog passed the 5.5 million views mark, more than 13,000 Sil users are following along on Instagram, Periscope has been hugely popular right out of the gate, and the YouTube channel is gaining popularity fast!

Silhouette Studio Library: Adding Keywords for Easy Search

It's back to basics today on Silhouette School!  Weekly contributors Becky and Glenna from My Paper Craze are here with some tips on how to save designs to your Silhouette Studio library so you can find them fast!

Silhouette Studio, keywords, library files

Saving files created in Silhouette Studio is nothing new; it's a fundamental step that we learn in the beginning. But have you ever created a design and not been able to remember what file name you saved it under? If your hand is raised - we've got some tips for you today to save your time and sanity!

Silhouette CAMEO 2 Control Panel Shape (Free Silhouette Studio File)

A few months ago I share a Silhouette tutorial on how to customize the control panel on your Silhouette CAMEO and I got a million follow up questions about doing something similar for the CAMEO 2. Unfortunately, unlike the original CAMEO it's not nearly as easy because there's no CAMEO 2 control panel shape in the Silhouette Studio library.  However...using the power of PixScan and tracing I have created one so no one will be left out and everyone can customize their machines - even a CAMEO 2! Woop Woop!

Door Photos Shadow Box with Silhouette Studio (How to Design and Print and Cut)

I got the idea for this project while in Barcelona this spring, where the doors and architecture are stunning. You certainly don’t need to go to a foreign city to do it though.  I’m sure you can find some inspiring scenes in your own hometown. Or find a cute graphic design that has a door and use the same technique as I did here with a little camper that I turned into a retirement card.

This Silhouette Studio has quite a few steps, but they're all pretty easy and straight forwards so just follow along and you'll be making 3D door photos in no time!

Chalkboard Printables Template: Free Silhouette Studio Cut File

It's freebie Friday and this week I'm sharing a free chalkboard printable template with you! These are popular for the beginning and end of the school year and since it's Back to School time I thought you could use it - even if the first day of school has already happened.  Don't worry in 15 years no one will know that the third grade 'first day' picture happened during the second week of school. ;)

Funny, too, right?!

Silhouette Hack for Easy Glitter HTV Weeding (It's All About the Sketch)

If you've ever cut Glitter HTV you know it can be extremely difficult to see the cut lines which can sometimes lead to mistakes when weeding.  Well today Silhouette School contributors, Becky and Glenna from My Paper Craze are here to share a genius Silhouette hack they came across recently to make easy work of weeding intricate glitter HTV designs.

A Commercial Font Deal with Something for Everyone! (Plus: How to Open .EPS files in Silhouette Studio)

Another month and another font deal that is just too good to pass up - the thing I like about this one is there's something for everyone whether you like handwritten fonts, stencil fonts or graphics! The Huge Font Deal from The Hungry JPEG includes 49 fonts with commercial license, plus lots of bonus graphics, dingbats and ornaments - all for just $29. As always the deal is only good for one month - so jump on it!

This is a sponsored post, but as always all opinions are my own.

Cutting Cookie Stencils with Silhouette

The Silhouette is becoming increasingly popular with cookie and cake decorators. I've shared a few lessons in the past about how to cut sugar sheets with Silhouette CAMEO and how to sketch and cut with Silhouette and food safe markers, but today we're going one step further to create perfect cookie stencils with Silhouette.

Silhouette Cameo, cookie stencil, DIY, do it yourself

I have no skills in the cookie baking department, so today I'm teaming up with the extremely talented Laura from Cadillac Cookies.  When I say extremely, it's pretty much an understatement if you go by her mad skills displayed on her drool worthy Instagram page!
