Does Press 'N Seal as Vinyl Transfer Tape Really Work? (Silhouette Tutorial & Review)

Have you ever wanted to throw together a quick vinyl project only to realize you've run out of transfer tape?  Silhouette School contributors Becky and Glenna from My Paper Craze are in the classroom today to share a lesson on using Press'n Seal as a transfer tape substitute.

I was so excited when I got my snacker cup in the mail that I had ordered and I just couldn't wait to slap some vinyl on it. I was heartbroken when I realized I hadn't bought any more transfer tape after I ran out. Can you guess what my solution was? Glad Press'n Seal Wrap to the rescue (or so I hope!).

I had read about a technique in which Glad Press'n Seal Wrap is used as transfer material so I wanted to check it out for myself.

You want to start by creating the design in Silhouette Studio. I sized mine for my cup in Silhouette Studio. This particular cup is quite large.  The shape is called Circle Flowers from the Silhouette Online Store (but you would actually search "mum" and it'll pop up) and the free font is Desigers from Dafont.com. I used the offset feature to create the outline of the text.

Once my design was cut, I set out to test the Glad Press'n Seal Wrap for both weeding methods: Regular Weeding and Reverse Weeding.

I weeded one of the purple shapes as I normally would, then decided to try reverse weeding on one of the pink shapes. I cut two pieces of the Press'n Seal a bit larger than each vinyl shape and placed them on top - sticky side down. I say sticky side but it actually isn't sticky until you put pressure on it. If you have any doubt as to which side is which, you can just pinch it between you fingers.

I then burnished it really well with my Silhouette Scraper, but you could use a credit card, gift card or anything similar.

Transferring the purple design was a breeze. There were three flower petals that I had to rub with my fingernail to help them along, but I didn't find that to be too much inconvenience AND there was NO residue left on the vinyl. The only downside I encountered was that the Glad Press'n Seal Wrap is pretty flimsy compared to regular transfer tape and requires a little effort to keep it from wrinkling. Once you're aware of it, though, it's really not a big hindrance.

Then came the reverse weeding on the pink shape. It wasn't a complete fail because I actually got it done BUT it was way more trouble than it was worth. The Glad Press'n Seal Wrap wouldn't release on at least half of the flower petals. Maybe I burnished it a little too well, but I'm leaning towards just the regular weeding from now on if I need to use this method in a pinch again. Here's how the finished product turned out!

  3. Hi, I'm writing to you from South Africa, to share a cheat that I've found - we have something called contact paper, which is basically a plastic sticky wrap that you'd use to cover kids school books. It's really cheap and works brilliantly as transfer paper. In fact, it can sometimes be a bit too sticky, so I sometimes push it against a towel or the carpet to remove some sticky first!
    Hope that helps!

  6. I used press n seal as transfer tape for a recent project, but I’m having a lot of trouble with it leaving a sticky residue behind, on the vinyl and on the surfaces I’m applying the vinyl to. Do you have any recommendations on getting the residue off? I’m afraid to scrub too hard and then mess up the vinyl.
