Easily Change Colors of Silhouette Print and Cut Files

Print and Cut File, change color, Silhouette tutorial
Did you know that you can customize the colors of the purchased print and cut files.  So if you purchase a Print and Cut file (marked with a P) from the Silhouette Online Store, you are not stuck with the pre-filled colors. You can change any and all of them.

Awhile back I bought this fish bowl design to use for my son's Valentine's Day classmate gifts so I'll use it for this tutorial.

The first thing you want to do is open up Silhouette Studio and navigate to the design.   Open it in the work area.

When you click on it you'll see it's all grouped together.

To click on individual pieces, you'll need to ungroup. I had to ungroup three or four times to get the entire thing ungrouped.

Now you can select individual pieces and change their colors.  Highlight your first piece...say, CATCH. Then click on the Fill Color tool..and click on the new color.

Move to your next piece and repeat....

If you get to a piece and you fill and it turns out like the fish, it's because it's not ungrouped enough.

If I ungroup as far down as I can go and then move the pieces apart you can more easily see the layers of the fish. The eye I will keep the same, but I want to change the body and the tail/fins.

The body is a solid color but the tail and fin pieces are gradient.  If you click the gradient fill icon you'll get a bunch of options to choose from.

Layer the pieces back on top of each other, rearrange and then group everything together.

Before your print and cut be sure you go back in and make sure there is only a cut line around the outside of the design.

  1. This tutorial does not appear to work anymore. When I try to ungroup a PNC image now, the only thing that ungroups is the outline. The individual parts of the image no longer ungroup. :(

It might be a good idea to remove tutorials that no longer work. And yes, I have SSDE.

  2. Wish I had seen the above comment before I purchased an image. I couldn't ungroup the parts either. The image is unusable to me as is so it was a waste of money.
